warping

i got a problem with warping
when i got my vista about a week ago i noticed everyone warped every 30 seconds or so. had no previous problems with my old XP that has 5x less ram and a graphics accelerator. i have same modem just AOL is not provider anymore. Is my internet the problem?
any way to fix this?

i'm assuming ur using dial up, and if so, i would say its a combo of that (tho i've heard it can work ok) and vist (which is the worst OS ever spawned).

try putting XP on that comp and getting dsl!

Check the Sticky posted at the top of the Technical Help thread. You can get the game to run on vista, but there are a number of things to check on your system to get it as stream lined as possible.

Honestly, if I were you I would. I'm sure you can purchase XP online somewhere. However, last time I was at Sam's Club shopping with the wife I noticed they had XP Pro on sale for $80 bucks. I grabbed two copies, even though I'm running XP pro right now; I figured I would grab one for the other computer as well and keep an extra for my machine.

But looking at your netstatus I'm not surprised you are seeing a lot of warping. I'd run a ping plot to the IP's skuzzy has posted in his sticky in the technical support thread for each arena. Then either post the screenshot here on the BB, or email it to skuzzy. If you don't have ping plotter you can obtain a copy, I believe they have a free version but I know for a fact they have a trial version. Just google ping plotter and it will take you where you need to go.

And also, read the sticky about windows Vista performance tips and tricks and his general tips and tricks sticky. Closing background processes you don't need and programs running in the background you don't need will help a bit if it's not entirely your ISP's fault.

Then look top left, 3rd or 4th down is "adjust power settings".

If this is anything other than "high performance", you've found your problem.  Set it to high performance and check your net status now.

G, I thought no way could you be right about that. I thought all it controlled was when your monitor kicked off, and HD. I went from spikes that were off the scale to a flatline in delay, and the warp was gone. Unbelievable.

Power monitoring is a hideous atrocity in laptops.  Funny thing about it in Vista is it actually shortens battery life.

Careful suggesting to someone to pickup Vista if they aren't computer savvy.  Many hardware vendors deployed platforms for distribution through complete systems and VISTA ONLY.  Therefore, some hardware may not work readily and easily with XP.

Not to mention, places like gateway will not support XP if it originally came with Vista.  Nor will they supply the drivers.  You PROBABLY can find the correct drivers once you have properly identified your hardware on the actual manufacturers website, but often they remove responsibility of some of their products and thus will not offer drivers too.

Always check that your system is compatible with the operating system you wish to dive into. 

It held true readily jumping from xp to vista...as many had to upgrade to run it.  It also holds true in the reverse.

Just try to cover all the basis here.  Like I said probably won't be an issue if you know what you are doing, but if you are not tech savvy chances are you might have some issues getting things resolved.  Forums are a great place to help you rectify those too.

Also be warned that this isn't strictly a Laptop issue.  I have a desktop that came OEM from the factory with the power settings set to stupid.  No matter what kind of system it is, if a player is having massive warps with very spiky net status, the first thing that the FAQ should say to check IMHO is these power settings, laptop or desktop.

I'm not really sure about that, but I'm guessing that it's just one fancy way of labeling the setting as something along the lines of "energy efficient," etc.
