Medieval Faire
« on: April 07, 2008, 06:53:58 PM »
It's almost medieval faire season again and I would like to know if anyone knows anybody that does era style clothing.  Sure, they can be purchased online, but I'd rather see my money go to someone in the AH community.  Looking for either monk or archer style cloak, brown pants or trews, and cotton drawstring style shirt.

We have one that comes around here every year. Nothing huge but a nice size.
Anyone that dressed in period costume they used to let in for free.
Sadly they discontinued that practice.
I never dressed the part but it was pretty cool seeing the getups people would come in wearing.

Was there a bunch of years ago with my brother in law and we stopped as a vendor that made chain mail.

for chuckles I tried the one on that goes over your head I think its called a Coif or something like that.
My brother in law looked at me and suddenly his jaw dropped.
I was like "what?"

He smiled and said. you belong in that. That looks better and more natural on you then anything I've ever seen you wear. LOL

For a theme Halloween party, I had a friends wife make a medieval style shirt for me.  She picked up the pattern at a sewing store and I just paid materials and time.

I added some boots and a 'wall hanger' sword with sheath. Pants were sweatpants tucked in the boots.

Pays to know someone who can sew.  Chics dig rogues! :rock

Have fun!

If you can post a pic I'd love to see that.  I imagine it's quite nice.

On topic Dragon, the fair here had some pretty good craftsman, I'll dig through some old files and see if I have any contacts.

Sadly none of the fairs come to my area, I really miss them.  Went every time the Army had me near one and not deployed.

Check at the local library to see if you have a SCA group close. They can "hook you up".

I work at TRF every year for a shop there, but sadly the person who made some of my garb moved away.

Many moons ago I played D&D and one day one of the guys I played with said they were going down to the park for something cool. I went with them and it turned out they started whacking eachother with fake swords and stuff pretending they were knights. I felt really embarrassed.

My brother's friend goes to those fairs. He dresses up in some wizard outfit or something.

Hee hee. Those SCA guys are insane. :D

Quote
A friend of a friend lives in NYC and participates in the SCA [Society for Creative Anachronism]. He's stereotypical Viking, 6'7" tall, LONG blonde hair, about 350 - 400 lbs of solid muscle, and looks every bit of it.

Well, he was going to a meet in full getup with long cloak and battle axe and sitting on the subway... hunched over leaning on the axe with the cloak pulled over it so he wouldn't scare anybody.

Lo and behold some little punk comes up... MAYBE 5'2", 120 lbs soaking wet, and brandishes a knife saying "GIMME YOUR MONEY!" Naturally the guy sits there... somewhat befuddled at the balls of this punk. "GIMME YOUR *bleepin* MONEY OR ELSE!" and the guy stands up... and up... and UP. Raising the battle axe over his head, screaming at the top of his lungs "BLOOD FOR ODIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

At this point, the fellow passengers learn the true sound of terror. Not a scream, no curses, just a simple little "urk" as the guy leaves a wet spot as he's bolting for anywhere but here.

A couple weeks later our friend is at a club in the men's room, doing what all guys do when they've had a bit of ale, and looks over and at the next stall is that SAME PUNK! Up for a bit of a laugh, the guy leans over, and quietly whispers in the dude's ear "Blood for Odin".

The cops catch up with him a couple blocks away... screaming bloody murder, running like the hounds of hell are after him, with his pants around his ankles.

Yeah, I'm one of the guys who started beating each other with fake swords, but I've recently moved on to historical German Longsword combat. Night and day.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.
