Air-Sea Rescue Planes!
« on: April 09, 2008, 03:46:35 PM »
We should make this game a bit more realistic by giving more incentives to bail. Like maybe have a respawn timer, and/or make the perk points worth the trouble. These planes could be used to pick up people who bailed in the sea. Some can also carry bombs. They could also carry depth charges to destroy subs and they could launch and refuel at subs(if we get them). They could also carry troops, and could be observer planes for gunners. Every day I'll have a new post of airplanes(all period realistic), they will each be over a different category they are:

  • Air-Sea Rescue
  • Assault Glider(Won't be as boring as you think)
  • Dive Bomber
  • Fighter(For the programmers I found a book full of fighter schematics)
  • Heavy Bomber
  • Light Bomber
  • Night Fighter
  • Patrol-Bomber
  • Liason and Reconnaissance
  • Search and Rescue(HELICOPTERS!!!!!)
  • Torpedo-Bomber
  • Transport(need more variety)

Here are the planes with pictures, if you want more info ask and I will edit the post to include spec for that plane:

  • Curtiss SO3c Seamew Mid-War Only

  • Curtiss SOC Seagull All Periods

  • Douglas OA-4/RD Dolphin All Periods

  • Grumman J2F Duck All Periods

  • Grumman OA-14/J4F Widgeon All Periods

  • Grumman JRF/OA-9 Goose All Periods

  • Hall PH Early and Mid-War Only

  • Martin PBM Mariner All Periods

  • Vought OS@U Kingfisher All Periods

Only sea planes that would be worth having is the American Catalina. The japanese CV born sea plane. And the German seaplane with i believe help most of the world records for a sea plane at the time(cant remeber the name).

The fact that you only included American aircraft in this is telling.
Though, Im not sure what the Germans and Japanese would have used. Germans, I imagine, Tante Ju's maybe? Perhaps Kondors? Maybe Fiesler Storchs? Or maybe the Ar96....

I'm all for adding these planes to AH just for the whine factor.  If shooting chutes makes people cry, then imagine the volume level of the whines when you shoot down a SAR plane.

Wrong,

It was on an episode of "wings of the Luftwaffe" they were talking about it, it was used during the war to scout for supply ships. I also think they attacked them as well(not sure).

Some sources rate the later versions of the Kawanishi H8K "Emily" among the very best flying boats of WWII...

Actually somebody almost brought up a GREAT use for them..... resupplying a carrier.

We could fly them from land base, land them in water within carrier group (its sphere of influence).  And then with a return to tower, you've resupplied the carrier. That or have them land and then have to sit in the area for a while (kinda like rearming pads, except reversed) until a little text message pops up saying "Carrier resupplied"  It would require a bit of skill, since the pilot would have to land in such a place that they will stay within the carriers "sphere of influence" for the entire rearming, as well as it would be difficult should the carrier run them down doing maneuvers during a big fight.

I don't get why we can't just land a goon on a CV and resupply it...
Err...sorry...
I do wish we could get a CV resupplied faster...

A sea plane would be nice, but they where mostly scouts and SAR. I dont know if they where really all that good as fighters.

Sorry to sound ignorant but helicopters weren't used in military use until Vietnam, right?  I know helicopters were in their early years during WWII, but I'm unclear as to if they used them or not. (I ask because if they did use helicopters to rescue in WWII, then that would make more sense in this role IMHO.  Not sure how people would feel about a chopper being implemented into the game regardless.)
I'm Sector95 in-game! :-D

i know my library had little info on others but i will try and do parrelel articles for axis planes. The other allies used these planes too. So on my other posts I will try to get other planes too but if I leave some out just post the name and pic(specs if you want). Help me out instead of people.
