Judging by the last line in that article, I would say the whole thing was intended to be tounge in cheek.

But they're germans, so ...  :noid

Yeah I thought so too. I looked at the other links so it appears the German equivalent to the Onion. Very tongue in cheek.

This story is true.

The carp were put into the moat around the Polar Bear exhibit to eat algae that was growing inside the moat.  For some reason, zoo officials had forgotten that Polar Bears are predators, and have an instinct to kill.

Knut is distraught that he is now an ungainly adolescent, and that there is a new baby Polar Bear at the zoo named Flocke that is now getting all of the press attention.

So this is probably just your typical adolescent acting out in order to get attention.

Knut should be happy, though, as the zoo got Flocke ( a female ) so that Knut will eventually have someone to mate with, and make yet more baby Polar Bears.

Here is a link to the story that BBC news did about this:

Yanno whats even more amusing is one would think the visitors would be facinated at watching a bear do in captivity. What they spend countless hours watching them do in the wild on a National Geographic special on TV.

Personally I would think that would be the coolest thing to watch a  bear actually hunt in person without the worry that it might decide to hunt me.

That would serve him right. When his kids grow up he will have to have that talk with them. " Look I ate a lot of carp when I was your age but....."

The definative reason to support capital punishment...jocularity implied. Slaughter? Murder? Woah, and they just report the 'deaths' of kidnapped children.

It's a shame the Germans don't have CCW (Carps Carrying Weapons). This senseless tragedy could have been easily averted.

It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)
