bj.. the best carb I ever used on a Harley bar none..  was the SU.    It made the thing start on the first to third kick every single time.. no pops or farts.. smooth acceleration..  with solids and an andrews cam and gears it was a great way to ride.   Put about 100k on that setup.

Hehe. Ran a Mikuni for a while on an old Harley.
Had a hell of a time keeping it tuned. I knew a giant of a bro who ran one on his shovel, so I caught him at the local dive one night and asked him what the trick was.
He told me to fire her up, give it a good run till it was certain it was at top temp, set it level, then tune it.
He went on to say to do that every time you popped it off and you wouldn`t have any more problems. :)
I bought him a beer and bought me an S&S the next day.

Why not a Linkert carb?  The Linkert on one of my Brothers' 1947 Indian Chief works great.  He rides it to work (40 mi round trip) on a regular basis.  No starting worries from the carb.
I still have the old Linkert, but even with the rebuild kit, the jet was so worn out that the bike couldn't be leaned---it got about 25 mpg, and raw fuel poured out pipe....ate up a pair of plugs every tank of gas (the 10 foot flames out the back were damned impressive though :lol) Was a nightmare to keep running at any rate--also the Linkert has no accelerator pump...a few miles with the Kehin, bike seemed to have twice the power. If I had a few bucks I didn't need, I'd buy the smaller S&S, (or maybe the Bendix with dial-a-jet') but the bike runs ok, and I just can't justify the cost with so much other crap going on around the house

Worked out a pretty good deal with the local dealer for this one. Think I'm gonna ride it home tomorrow or Sat.

Nice.  If you are not too far away, one of my Bros has that exact same bike (red looks a little lighter) that he's looking at trading in.  I know HD will not give him what he wants for it, so I'm sure he will end up selling it himself.  Low miles, always garaged and well taken care of.  Located in south Alabama.  Let me know if you are considering slightly used.  (save some $$$)

Thanks but I'm in Idaho. Not ready for that long of a road trip.

This is a new 2007 bike and they came off the msrp by $1,400 and no shipping or setup fee.

LOL, that would be a stroll all the way from Idaho.  Heck of a way to get used to a new bike.  If you trailored it, you would spend the difference of a new one in gas (and then some).

Sounds like a good deal.  Thats cool how they are working with you on price.  More than I can say for HD.  I'm Harley Davidson 'till the end, but thats one thing I don't like........the dealers will NOT move (much) on their prices.

Good luck and keep us posted :aok

Drove it home Friday, a 2007 VTX-1300R, metallic red. Of course the weather got cold, it hasn't been much above freezing since. Still, I went for a ride with it lightly snowing today. Pictures eventually.  :D
