« on: April 14, 2008, 08:05:57 PM »

I know that it is from 30th GVIAP. From May of 1945 and was flown by Maj. M.P. Renz. P-39N.

Plane name is called "For the lost Brothers". Thats what it translates to from Russian.

This would be a great birthday present guys....  :)

Possibly in other aircraft though.

The wind for their watcher, the wave for their shroud,
Where palm and pandanus shall whisper forever,
A requiem fitting for heroes

From P-39 Aces (Osprey) p.95:

"P-39N-1 42-9553 "White 84"

Mikhail Rents flew this P-39N from the beggining of 1944 to wars end. It was painted much like Filatovs fighter, except that its bort number was inexplicably applied in white instead of yellow. On the left fuselage, to the rear of the cockpit, Rents had the motto "For My Perished Brothers" applied, this slogan honouring his two brothers who had died at the front, and a third who had returned home legless."

Major Rents (Hero of the Soviet Union) scored 20 individual and 5 shared victories all with 30 GIAP.

It would be a P-39Q, as its late war, and the Russians usually removed the wing guns. If you have a P-39Q without gondolas its the same as a P-39N.

...If you need a better pic than the one posted, send an email to me at ahsquire@telus.net and I will fire off a new gif scan of much better quality TK.

This one served in the same unit as the one you are skinning, and my info indicates the camo and markings would have been the same. Its a P-39 delivered with the Soviet stars on the a/c by Bell.

http://hsgalleries.com/p39qbv_1.htm

Many late war US P-39s like these were delivered in standard US olive drab (as usual), with Soviet markings applied at the Bell factory, this one seems to be one of those (as well as Major Rents a/c).

***********************************************************************************
Just for info:

...Most P-39s were delivered with US markings, which is why on many (although not all) you see the green overspray and the red stars over top on the fuselage (the default P-39Q skin as an example), or the US blue circle with the white US star over painted red, or in other cases they used a white circle with a red star design. Depended on the model and year.

My info is that the versions that did have the US markings overpainted, did not typically have the red stars on the upper surfaces, just the lower (again as per the P-39Q default skin).

Later versions that did have them on the upper wings were delivered that way to the Russians by Bell, which I guess the Russians just left them on.
