Macs
« on: April 20, 2008, 11:26:06 PM »
So, why do you hate Macs?

I personally hate the way that people that own Macs act. As soon as someone buys an act they become an elitist and think they are better than you. Mac users look for ways to flaunt why their computer is better. You don't even have to be talking about a Mac and they throw it out there.
"I was eating outside today with Pawel and Haley when a  squirrel came up to us, I took a piece of bread and offered it to the squirrel and it took it from my hand and ate it"
"Oh really? That reminds me of this time I was at the park with my Mac, and I was sitting on a bench and I saw this other girl with a Mac and we started talking. I love Macs, it's like they bring us all together. You shold really get a Mac!"
"Well I looked up Macs and I can get a Dell laptop with a better processor, twice the RAM, 3 times the Hare Drive space and it comes with a 5 inch bigger screen, for the exact same price."
"Yeah but it doesn't run as smoothly as the Mac, the Mac just runs better and is more organized"

I swear, Mac users are in a cult!

Apple does a fantastic job of selling an image.  A lot of folks really buy into it, and a lot of people in general like to think they've got the best of whatever.  I haven't touched a Mac in a long long time, so I couldn't really comment on how well they work... though recently I'd be more inclined to try one.  But not enough to spend any more $ than I would building a PC.  So, essentially, I wouldn't try one.  Also, the retarded PC vs Mac commercials really make me not want to try them... the same way The Truth commercials made me want to start smoking.

-edit- On a side note... I filled in for a couple of weeks doing support for the Mac FCS at ThrustMaster while the Mac guy was out.  Never in my life have I heard grown men whimper so damned much.  Like when you tell your 5-year-old they can't have that toy they see on the way to the checkout counter; only I was telling adult males how to do something and that something wasn't done the way they were used to doing things.

No, we just know our computer is better than yours. :t

Raptor, I own 4. iMac, Mac Mini and 2 MacBook Pros. Also have the iPhone and three iPods. I guess when I found something that worked as well as all my Apple products do, at everything I need them to do, I had no need for any other. I would agree that some Mac owners see their computers as "Elite". Maybe it's because they are so danged expensive and these people use it as a status symbol. I buy Apple for functionality and compatibility; not because I have more money than anyone else or feel the need to make someone feel that way.

Don't hate Mac's for their idiot owners. Hate them because they will outlast that Dell you priced years over and look pretty cool doing it :D

<-- using a Dell PC from 2002 that I got for about $900. Performs just as well as computers priced at $900 today. Admittedly I have added RAM, a DVD Burner and a second hard drive over the years.

All computers in my house are Macs, and 3 of them are Windows compatible.

Never had a problem with any of them.

Macs=too expensive...I could get 3 Windows computers for the price of 1 mac...even the $300 computers last a while.  I've still got a 2001 HP that cost $600 then, not worth $100 now, but still.  That old HP stills runs fine without any upgrades.

Funny you should ask..

I am unfortunate enough to have to buy a Apple, because I need to use this one specific program that only works on Macs. I've always felt the same way, about them thinking they are elitists or something. I dunno what it is, but I always think of the South Park "smug" episode when I think of Apple users.

With that said, I always believed the hype that Apples were supposedly top notch machines because well everyone claims they are. Funny thing now that I'm researching them, I find for the most part they are all over priced and under spec machines compared to a PC that cost the same.

I just built a high end quad core PC a few months ago and it cost about $1,600 to $1,700. For that price there is nothing that Apple offers that can come even close to matching my machine for anything close to that price range.

The "only" positive thing I can see that Apples have going for them, is their resell value. Apple updates once or twice a year and during that time the prices are fixed. So if you buy a iMac on day one of the current release, it will cost the same up until the day the new one is released. (sucks for those who buy just b4 a new release). Yes that definitely has it's draw backs but when you are ready to sell you will likely get more out of it than a used PC.

So my plan is to buy a refurbished iMac and sell it in a year (has a one year warranty) Then upgrade to what ever the current model is. Rinse and repeat as necessary until I no longer need to use the program or till it's ready to use on windows..

They're just like Starbucks.  Their coffee tastes like crap, but they'll always be around as long as there are a folks who would like to be seen sitting in their outdoor chairs.  But 7-11 coffee tastes better.

Dang it Crockett, I was gonna use that reference.

Back when I first got involved in media production, the Mac was the only game in town. I remember an intern proclaiming "real musicians only use macs" in the company of a couple of fairly prominent players. One of them, an old guy who is one of the senior statesmen of the blues told him he'd been playing since the kid's grandpa was a boy and he couldn't even spell "mac".

Now pc's are in every studio worth mentioning and if I'm not mistaken even the graphics guys are using them. I'm not sure how it is in the post OS X world but prior to that, owning a Mac network was an expensive and frustrating ordeal.

Having a unix core is the best thing that happened to mac. I know a lot of physicists that use mac so they can run all their unix software on it. The other option is a linux machine (my choice) but if you do not want to fiddle with it and just want something that works, mac is the best option.

A friend of mine decided to get a Mac way back when.  The thing was down more often than it was up.  And since I was the computer savvy one of the bunch (I learned DOS and Windows 3.1 to revive an ailing old computer) it was always up to me to fix it.

I think I still have the same rage issues because of that single Mac computer.

Since then I've had annoying times with all other macs I've touched.
