Virtual reality headset for Aces High
« on: April 21, 2008, 09:51:53 PM »
Has anybody heard of a product called Vizix VR920 virtual reality headset?
I have seen some reviews of it and it looks pretty cool, and the website mentions that is compatible with a whole bunch of games including Aces High.  It also has its own built-in motion sensor similar to the IR Tracker.  Has anybody seen this product and action, and if so is it any good.

I use a Emagin Z800, a bit better than the VR920 but significantly pricier. The screens do 800x600 and the FoV is better.

However I don't think you can beat the VR920s bang for buck. Especially if you're new to VR. I've heard the VR920 scales stuff well to 800x600 and 1024x768.

I use the trackir emulator for AH and it works extremely well. You cannot get head movement along axis though (ie just look around not move around), but in my case I mapped lean left/right to the rocker on my X45 throttle and it works well. It supports saved views but I don't like the way your head moves to those.

Headtracking + stereoscopic 3d views makes a huge difference to AH, it goes from being a flat game to being much much more immersive.

It's a shame, true 1:1 headtracking would make a big difference in the sense of realism.

Thanks Vulcan for that sounds really interesting,  :aok I was just looking on the website and it said that you could not use the Vr headsets for very long perhaps only about one hour, have you found it to be the case?

It is 1:1. I'm not sure what you mean?

Depends entirely on the person. I can go for hours without problems. Some people I know cannot last minutes. If you get motion or seasick then VR is not for you.

If there's no support for lateral head movement, you're not really immersed in 3D - stuck in a pinhead so to speak.

Keep in mind that stereoscopy is only supported on legacy nvidia graphics cards and 78.xx drivers (meaning no card younger than 2 years will run it properly). So if you have a 8800 series card, you can forget about using the visor - there aren't drivers available.

I bought shutter 3D glasses myself and got them to work through extensive driver tweaking and hacks - but there was glitching on many games.

Theres people using 3d on the 8x cards at www.mtbs3d.com

I see what you mean about stuck on a pinhead, its not a biggie to be honest. And like I said I use my x45 rocker to lean left/right.

That visor you pictured is what I have - is there another z800 user in AH? (if so who!)

So what is the graphics quality and a frame refresh rate like?  I currently use a higher resolution than 22 inch LCD monitor, so even if you got the VR effect is the graphics quality up to a similar standard?
I would definitely want high-quality graphics because wearing those virtual reality goggles my kids and make fun of me! :lol

The 3D more than makes up for the lower resolution. It's so much different.
