Well this certainly sucks
« on: April 22, 2008, 10:58:08 PM »
As mentioned in another thread I ordered a Anthlon 64 4000+ to replace my 3200

Planned on installing it tomorrow and play the game tonight. In the game a few minutes and she locks up on me yet again.
So I say the hell with it and figure I'll just install the new CPU tonight and see if that helps.

shoulda left well enough alone.

Installed the CPU and went to boot up.
Fans turned but nothing happened.
Checked wiring,Vid card etc. Rebooted.
Same thing.

Ok put the old CPU back in.
Clean off the paste. put on new past and reinstall CPU.
Now NOTHING happens. No fans no lights.nothing.

Hooked up different power supply (from the E Machine) Still nothing.

I'm guessing, unless someone else has another idea its the motherboard.
Dunno how I coulda done it as I had myself grounded to the chassis the entire time working on it.

If thats the case Im screwed for a while at least game wise as I just got done paying taxes and other assorted bills.
And and a few more assorted ones due in the next couple of weeks.
This frigging blows

Most likely the locking up was all the time due to your

a) Motherboard
b) Ram

Did you check your ram slots that they are absolutely sure seated properly? One comb even a little crooked may render the computer unbootable. Next remove all peripherals except cpu, main harddrive, ONE ram stick and displaycard. Try to boot up.

If it fails, change the memory stick to another and try again. Make sure that you reset your CMOS before trying the above just to make sure you didn't screw anything up in the settings.

If the above continues to fail it might be the motherboard or it might be displaycard or another broken device. Try booting up with only cpu , hd and ram next, if it beeps for 'post' then you have a displaycard problem.

Don't buy new hardware untill you've performed those steps.

What type of computer do you have?  I have an E-machines and tried replacing a part and managed to kill my motherboard.  I had the same symptoms...fans and lights came on but nothing else, and replacing anything i could didn't help.  I figured i hit something, only to find out it failed and i had no part in it.  So if you have E-machines with a MS-7202 motherboard it was just time.

Im gonna try pulling hardware after work today.

1701E,

Its a machine I built myself a couple of years ago and

K8 Triton GA-K8NSC-939 motherboard
Originally Anthlon 3200+

Nvidia card 7600 GS 512 MB (AGP)

Recently upgraded to 3 Gig of ram (from 1.5).

Dred, this could have been as simple as a bios upgrade... IF the old processor was built on 130nm achitecture and the 4000 was built on the newer 90nm architecture a simple bios may have given compatibility... did you check connector panel? any chance the pw switch connector came loose... those tiny ones do it all the time on me... (I am talking about the one to the case, not the 20 pin +4 pin from power supply)

Yea checked that connector too.
Even pulled it off then put it back on again.

Its not starting with either CPU. I have the old one in there now and still nothing

It could be a simple short causing the problem (not unusual if its an old system with dust etc). try removing the mainboard from the case completely, blow it off, and see if it will power up without being screwed in (rest it on something non-conductive).
