Tips on the Airacobra please

Flying it in the AvA now, and finding it a difficult plane to master.  Any hints?

Well, the line between stall buffet and full departure is razor thin. If you are not smooth on the controls, the P-39s can be ugly spin monsters.

Rear vision is odd, I set my view at all the way back and slightly left.

Speed is pretty good for the P-39Q, faster than the P-38J/L between 10k and 14k. Climb is adequate, but not what I would call good. Since the flaps were adjusted, the Q can turn reasonably small circles. Turn rate is not great though. Acceleration is also adequate, being a little better than the P-51B. Like the 109s, the P-39Q (and D) will not roll right at high angles of attack, especially with flaps out. Rudder use doesn't help much.

I recommend the two MG/37mm package in the Q as it is a good trade-off for better speed, climb and acceleration.

On a whole, the P-39Q is a pretty good mid-war fighter.

The P-39D offers much less performance. It weighs more and is down 270 hp to the Q model. There is no WEP power either. Climb is poor, as is acceleration. The lack of power and added weight results in a larger sustained turn radius.

Take the 37mm and practice with it. One hit will kill any fighter.

Both accelerate well in a dive, and display good control at very high speed. E retention is very good for both, with the Q being the better of the two.

Bomb or drop tank shackles will cut speed by about 7 mph, as will the under-wing .50 cal MGs available for the Q model.

If you want quick easy kills without having to master the 37mm, use the P-39D with the 20mms. Other wise, read Widewings posts  :lol

But with the P-39D, what I do know is, it doesnt gain E very fast, and with the verticles, it looses E fast. But when you get E and you keep it slight turns and slight pulls and yaws, it maintains E very well. With the P-39D (20mm) you should usually wait till 600-400 (suggest 400) and only shoot slight bursts to get the best out of the 20mms. Think of it almost like a spit 5 but with a little bit of a 50 caliber kick. Very nimble and is as maneuverable as an F4U up to 50% flaps. So you can probably turn fight a few things like the 109 (very hard, but do-able), N1k, P-51, La-7.

With the P-39Q, this is what I do, I usually take the 2nd gun pack with only 400 .50 cals so I'm more maneuverable. If I'm about to engage in a turn fight, I'll sneak up on lets say a running 51. Dont shoot your cannon just yet, ping him with just the .50s and get him to turn. If he is stupid enough to do so, then just keep up with him and get closer and closer. And finally wait till the right time when he is lets say 400-200 away. Then just shoot 2-6 37mms towards him. Hopefully you get a good hit. BAM!! Dead.

(P-39Q is my favorite buff hunter with the 37mm.  :aok )

Thanks, folks, this helped a lot.  Will defer further comments to the other P-39 thread, which I should have noticed before I posted this.
