The only German level bomber we have in the game so far is the Ju 88A-4 … a Battle of Britain veteran. Adding the He 111 or Do 17 would help with early war scenarios and such, but would be even less useful than the Ju 88 in the arenas. I therefore advocate the addition of 3 mid-late war German bombers:
Do 217M-1
“In almost every way, the Do 217 was a success. It could carry a much heavier bombload than either the Heinkel He 111 or the Junkers Ju 88. It was also very fast, surpassing both aircraft in maximum speed. It was Germany's largest bomber for nearly two years until the Heinkel He 177 was finally safe enough to use. Do 217's sank the Italian battleship Roma with Fritz X missiles as she steamed to the Allies after Italy's capitulation. Do 217's were phased out of combat use in mid 1944.”
Max speed: 348 mph at 18,700 feet.
Armament: One fixed MG 151 20 mm cannon in nose, one 13 mm MG 131 in dorsal turret, one MG 131 manually aimed at lower rear, three 7.92 mm MG 81 manually aimed in nose and beam windows.
Bomb load: Up to 8,818 lb. + fancy special weapons like glide bombs and missiles.
Probably the best medium bomber of the war that served in significant numbers.
He 177A-5 Greif
Only German heavy bomber to be produced in significant numbers. The A-5 version was the last and most capable version to see service in WWII.
Max speed: 351 mph at 21,000 feet.
Armament: 2 x 20 mm MG 151 cannon, 3 x MG 131 machine gun, 3 x MG 81 machine gun.
Bomb load: 13,227 lb internal. Typical bomb configurations: 48 x 154 lb, 10 x 1,102 lb, 6 x 2,204 lb, 2 x 5,511 lb, 3 x Hs 293 remotely controlled missiles, 3 x Hs 294 remotely controlled glide bombs, 3 x PC 1400 glide bomb, 4 x torpedoes.
Perk bomber Ju 188S/Ju 388L
A streamlined Ju 188 with defensive armaments reduced or removed (much like the bomber Mosquitoes which also should be added as perk bombers) fitted with highly rated Jumo 213E-1 engines. Only a few (less than 200) were produced before all bomber programmes were cancelled in 1944, but they did see combat.
Max speed: 426 mph at 37,730 feet.
Armament: In some versions: Two fixed forward firing MK 108 30 mm cannons, twin MG 131’s in tail barbette.
Bomb load: Up to 6,614 lb.
Any comments?
