The real sucky thing is I can fill up with premium cheaper than I can fill up with diesel.

What is up with that!
I'll tell you what's up with that. 18 wheelers don't use gasoline, they use diesel. EVERYTHING in this country is shipped by trucks that burn diesel. We are addicted to diesel worse than our addiction to gasoline. Heroin vs Crack.

There is a rumor JB Hunt Transportation is going to go out of business. They are the largest and cheapest trucking company in the US. They are the WalMart of transportation. If JB Hunt goes under things will get very ugly, very fast.
My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives.
Stay thirsty my friends.

Now the oil workers are so cheesed that their companies are making  13 bizzillion $$$£££'s a year  they have gone on strike.

Actually what they are striking over is the closure of their final salary pension scheme to new members. The scheme is being closed, like so many others, because Gordon Brown imposed a £5 billion a year tax on them. So this is something else you can pin on the government.

So now people are buying more, in a frenzied fear the supply will run out, earning more profit for these scoundrels.

The scoundrels responsible for fuel prices in the UK are the government.

With petrol at £1.08 per litre, the government takes 50.35p per litre in fuel duty and 16p in VAT. That means for every litre you buy the government takes 66.35p directly. The retailer and oil company get less than 42p, out of which they also pay taxes to the government.

there is a dated inspection sticker on the "pump", so you can see when it was last inspected.

A big flap in the trucking industry is "HOT" fuel. Since diesel tanks are refilled almost constantly at your major truckstops the fuel comes out of the plant, into the tanker, and straight to the site. Due to production methods it is very warm/hot and has expanded and takes quite a long time to cool to the measured amount mandated for proper calibration by the metered pumps. What this means is you pay for 1 gallon, the pump gives you 1 gallon but the actual amount once the fuel cools is less. Someone could do the research and find some articles to post about this i'm sure. There is a fairly easy mod that could be done to the pumps to give you the correct amount but the oil companies are fighting it tooth and nail saying it's to costly! :huh This from an industry that's making billions in profits every quarter. :furious

I heard something on the radio that gives me a new perspective.  They said that if you adjusted for the rates of inflation, we are paying now for a gallon of gas about what we were paying in 1980.  Don't know about the math but if its true its definietly something to think about.

I think maybe we went thru a period where gas prices were ridicuosly low and that has promoted poor consumption choices (i.e. SUV, Hummers, monster trucks).

Disclaimer: I drive a 6 cyl Toyota Tocohma.  Not the worst milage ever, but certainly not the best.  :)  So I guess I'm guilty too.

However, that said, I do think the price of gas is artificially high right now due to excessive speculation.  There is no supply shortage.

I know this won't help but, I wrote one of my senators in Virginia (Senator Warner) a letter about gas prices. In the letter I pointed out that he had sent me a glowing letter about how the government was doing this and doing that about gas prices.I have not seen Warners reality at the pump so I disrespectfully told him to "KISS MY GAS!" :devil

Diesel is more than gasoline for several reasons:

Diesel is more expensive to produce

Demand for diesel and similar fuel oils is up even more than for gasoline.

Federal taxes are higher for diesel

Transition to low-sulphur diesel has slowed down refinery supply

Why exactly is diesel more expensive to produce than gasoline, is it not less refined than gasoline?

Or is it more expensive to produce now because there is more demand for it?

Diesel use to always be considerably less expensive than gasoline until more people started driving diesel powered vehicles.

Not anymore. It's now required to have less sulphur than gas. (15 ppm compared to 30 ppm I think) Refining is a bit different for the 2 so it's probably not accurate to really compare, but you get the idea.

Actually right and wrong. Diesel is still cheaper in the initial form to produce than gas, however due to the low sulphur laws now it has to undergo more refining to take out the extra sulphur, thus it costs more to produce. Look at it as the difference between summer fuel and winter fuel for gasoline. What we need is a national standard of fuel blends to be used in all states all year round. Once that happens you will see prices stabilize if not drop. If we actually got a world standard of blends were everyone used the same blend you would see prices drop even more. I'm thinking of buying a horse but then the politicians will tax grass. No i don't mean pot either. :D

told you guys more than a year ago that the new EP frigging A low sulphur restrictions were gonna make diesel more expensive than gas.

I know about the low sulpher fuel. I own a diesel pickup and the subject has been hotly debated on some of the forums I belong too for some time now.

The only problem I have with that argument is that the prices of diesel started to rise above that of gasoline before the low sulpher fuel was implemented, here at least.
