Wonder why you can't have enemy players name icons.

I know everybody gonna say that you don't need to know who just the plane, but it's would be nice who you are doing battle with.

Never know you could be up against the red baron  lol.

P.S. Also while in F6 bomber sight position you don't have alt or speed.  I think it would be nice to know.

Hey Pokie,

On the surface it would be pretty cool but it would also allow for harassment of players. With the ability to know who someone was before engaging, you could hunt specific players, report their positions, etc.

On the other hand, I think it could also be cool. At long distances have icons as they are now. Get within say d-500 and have it change to player ID.

Although, with squad logos on the planes, it is possible now to narrow down who the opponent is if you get that close.

Make it an option...

If you want to simulate distinctive markings have two levels of names that can be attached to your planes: Squad name and / or Handle.

Neither one is visible until con range is under 500yrds.

While the tiny squad logo is pretty cool, it really can't be seen as easily as the distinctive markings some WW2 squads used. And make the range configurable on the server, for scenario play ("Holy moley! It's the Abbeyville gang!")

Or maybe even make the range USER configurable. That way squads or players could simulate VERY distinctive markings (usefull for both friend and foe in 'no con' scenario play)

Well I suppose you could always argue that the following would be fairly realistic

At the present 6000 yd starting range for icons, display aircraft major type and range

e.g.  Spit 5900

At say 2000 yds to 1000 yds, display range and aircraft subtype

e.g.  Spit V 1800

At 1000 yds on in to 0, display aircraft subtype and pilot name

e.g.  Spit V Mitsu

After all, the closer you got to an enemy, the more you would be able to distinguish about their aircraft.. initially just the type of aircraft they were flying, then the different sub-types, and finally the plane lettering and maybe kill markings on the tail or under the cockpit.

I aggree with the squad icon idea.
In real life they didn`t know who they fought with, but squads were recognizable.
 JG26-Yellow nose bastards for example.

Squad ID yes.

But pilot ID is a terrible concept. Newbies would find this game harder than they do already.

I enjoy not knowing how good the opponent is.

Always liked one of the setups in the HA arena i WB´s way back..

If you got inside distance 0.3 the enemy pilots name would pop up

------------------
AH : Maniac
WB : -nr-1-
Warbirds handle : nr-1 //// -nr-1- //// Maniac

"it's would be nice who you are doing battle with."

9 times out of 10 you end up knowing by being the victor or the vanquished

If the handle was in the icon you would see certain people be ganged up on right away in fights.

As it is now I may select, for example, a Spitfire as my prime target coming into a fight over the other aircraft as I deem them too lethal. But if I saw the handle of someone particularly dangerous, say Citabria since he's not her enow, I'd make a bee line for him firs

In RL you did not know who the other pilot was, ever, most times. It's not appropriate here, imo, in internet online play. The feature would be put to a perverted use whih c would essentially be to hunt the "aces."

I would prefer no name, and no plane type and distance - those take the mystery out of it.  Just have an icon that is a little knight, rook, or bishop so you know who you can and can't shoot.
