Boom, in bomber hull?
« on: June 01, 2008, 10:58:49 PM »
I was looking up on the internet at google for bombers who might of been blown into bits by there own bombs, it sounded crazy, yet i know it happens when i saw that it had been an enemy fighter plane that managed to get through escort of P-38's and shot the bay of the bomber causing the bombs inside to set off when hit. We don't happen to have that in AH2, do we? I never saw a bomber in AH2 have an accidental BOOM because of a bullet hitting a bomb.

February 1944,

Bomber escort was ambushed over German city by a small group (10) of 109K-4's. 6 were killed in dogfighting, 2 were gunned down by bomber gunners, 1 collided with bomber, last one seemed to have made it through all the hell and shot 22 rounds in the hull of the B-17G. The cause was fatal. Scientists analyzed the cause of death, they found a battered bomb with 3 holes and they predict that this cause the bombs to, set off in the hull.

It would be awesome to have this kind of thing happen when fighter shoots the belly of the bomber. To hell with enemy bomber pilots!

That's impossible. The 109K was not in service until late '44/45.

I never saw a bomber in AH2

I'll bet you've barely seen a fighter in AH2 as well.  :lol

Seriously, i've logged many hours in heavy bombers in AH2 and
can't remember ever having my bomb bay attacked.
If you can produce evidence (film/screen shots) that you and others
are regularly landing bullets inside open bomb bays in AH2 then maybe
you have a case.

If this thread should encourage fighter jocks to attack buffs from below
i won't object. :D

Everyone knows that a bomb could be set off by a bullet. But have you ever tried shooting a bomber in the belly were it keeps its bombs??

I find this somewhat surprising given the thick casings used in WWII era GP bombs. The AN-Mxx series of US bombs were approximately 50% casing & 50% explosive (comparable to today's Mk-82). This equates to a typical wall thickness of at least 1/2 inch (based on Mk-82 data).

The data I have states that .50 cal M2 AP was able to penetrate .75 in of steel @ 500 yd. This assumes an impact normal to the target (perpendicular). Taking into account the likely oblique angle of impact, as well as the decceleration and probable tumbling the round would experience after passing thru the aircraft structure, and it seems unlikely that the round would penetrate the bomb casing. Granted, the casing were cast and therefore not the strongest, but it still seems unlikely.
