a game from the past
« on: May 20, 2008, 05:47:15 PM »
while playing this game i was reminded of a game i used to play many years ago: Jane's WWII fighters.  it was a good game and one of the first pc games i played.  it was nicely detailed (maybe even better than this game) and was fun to play.  the realism was top notch (ie flak bursts and real damage). i still have it too.
always be nice to guys in the help forum, you'll never know if they give you bad advice until its too late.

You should load it up, Bucky, you'll probably find that nostalgia makes things seem better than they actually were.

I do remember this game and it was really good.

I remember as a kid thinking SubLogic's version of Flight Simulator for the Commodore 64 was awesome.

How many played Dauntless and Air Force board games by Battleline and then Avalon Hill?

I spent countless hours as a teen playing those games.

I messed around with that game a bit. In fact I still have both it and my sidewinder stick I mostly never used. At the time I was always amazed at what kind of world could be created in software. I used to create missions in the game and happily blast drone bombers out of the sky.

I never thought a game like AH could ever exist. But, there was a time when I never thought a computer game could exist.

Janes WW2 Fighters has to be what?...10 years old? All aspects, including the flight modeling and graphics were pretty darned good.

I did.

But as this kind of hobby was almost non-existant in Germany, I almost always had to play solo :(

But even today I get "Achtung Spitfire!" and "Over the Reich" out of the shelf and play around a little bit. Quite amazing games, especially when compared to the rather flawed Air Force series ;)

I spent countless hours as a teen playing those games.

Friends and I played Risk, Axis and Allies (with highly modified rules) and those old board games with the hexagonal grid maps.

In fact, one of those hexagonal grid games (Europe), we xeroxed and mounted on cardboard backing, then we xeroxed all the pieces and mounted those on cardboard, one set for each of us.  Then we set the maps the same and pinned the pieces in.  That way, we could carry our boards to each others houses and play, then we synced the boards and brought them home.  Even when we weren't together playing, we were studying the maps formulating strategies for the next rounds of play.

I still have copies of all those games in boxes somewhere.
I edit a lot of my posts.  Get used to it.

Never did Janes but I did European Air War online on the Zone, 6 max in an arena on dialup

My first was Their Finest Hour on the Amiga (with half meg ram upgrade!), FPS of 5 was a luxury

Game ID: Blimey

The only great thing about Janes WWII Fighters was the graphics. Otherwise it was just a glorified arcade shooter. European Air War wasn't as pretty, but was vastly superior as far as features and simulation.

However Aces of the Pacific is STILL the greatest WWII air-combat sim ever made.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.
