Ki-43
« on: June 03, 2008, 02:52:28 PM »
Hello All.

I’m a new guy on the block, but have enjoyed flying on, and off line in WW-II Combat Flight Sims since 1999.

When I signed on to “Ace High II” I was truly amazed, both by it’s realistic graphics and the “depth” of what was available.

There was but one disappointment.  My favorite aircraft, the Ki-43 “Oscar” was not available.  For those of us who love to fly turn fighters or, as some AH folks call them “Knife Fighters,” the Ki-43 is indeed one of the top three that were flown in WW-II.
--------------------------
Quote from:  “The Complete Guide To Fighters and Bombers Of The World”

“…development was abandoned until spring 1941, when combat flaps were added, thus increasing the wing area as required and creating a fighter that could turn inside the highly maneuverable Zero.  This modified version, which could dogfight with the best of the Allies’ fighters, went into service in June 1941 and proved very successful despite its light armament.  Most of Japan’s Army fighter aces built up their scores while flying the Ki-43.”

“…this aeroplane, code names “Oscar” by the Allies, was deployed in greater numbers than any other Imperial Army fighter, and was second only to Navy’s Zero in terms of sheer numbers in the Japanese inventory.”
----------------------------
Quote from:  “Aircraft of WW-II”

“…production totaling more than 5,900 aircraft right up to the end of the war.”

“Armament: 12.7mm fixed forward firing machine guns in the upper part of the forward fuselage, plus an external bomb load of 500 kg.”
-------------------------------

I truly believe that this nimble fighter would be a great addition to the “Aces high” inventory.
I therefore respectfully request that the Nakajima Ki-43 Huyabusa (Peregrine Falcon) be added to the “Aces High” inventory of available fighters for Early, Mid, and Late War arenas.

Thanks for listening,
QRS

I agree, for the most part, but think that we would have to have the Ki-43IIIb simply for the sake of armament (two nose mounted 20mm Ho-5 rather than the two nose mounted 12.7mm on all other models). The III model also had a dramatically improved top speed from the other models. The earlier models would simply be unacceptable for this game, save for very limited use in scenarios. The IIIb model might see similiar usage to the Ki-84 that we have.

Yes, any additions to the Japanese plane set would be nice, and I would certainly like to see the 43IIIb. Good first post QRS, and welcome to the boards.

AFAIK IIIb -variant never entered production, couple of prototypes were made before the war ended. IMO KI-43 should be included in the next version which adds new units into the game. If we look at the planeset it represents one of the biggest holes in the planeset. It's light armament is a big drawback but it would be absolute blast to fly.

KI-43 would probably be one of the most fun WWII fighters just to fly around and aerobat. Of course it's no Edge 540 but to have a radial engined plane with over 1000hp which can do over 500km/h and still be highly maneuverable and able to snap roll like in the link below...

...well I think that equals FUN! :)

Interesting reading (some contradicting points):

Think EWA and you have a competitive plane even if armed with "only" 2 12.7mm guns.  Not every plane needs to be a LWA monster to be added.

Welcome to AH QRS!   :aok

While personally, I just don't see the attraction to the OSCAR - many on here do. I am in agreement it should be added down the line as it was a very historical figure in most PTO battles.

Till we get the OSCAR - try the A6M2 ZERO - really close flight envelopes and the 20mm's of the Zero are usually only effective close in so it will kinda even out on armament.

Try it out in the AVA next PTO set-up if you want a more historical face off with Allied planes. The 49th FG always needs more Zero's as Targets for their P-38's.   :devil

GOOD LUCK AND GOOD HUNTING!

This plane was teh fun fun fun in Warbirds.

(Warbirds is an online game coaded by, uhm, some putz.)
... missions were to be met by the commitment of alerted swarms of fighters, composed of Me 109's and Fw 190's, that were strategically based to protect industrial installations. The inferior capabilities of these fighters against the Mosquitoes made this a hopeless and uneconomical effort. 1.JD KTB

Wholeheartedly agree on this. I can never understand why Aces High invariably needs to be treated like an arms race. Early and Mid-war rides/variants are just as fun, and more challenging (and rewarding) IMO.

My sentiments exactly Thunder!  I enjoy the inventory of AC/GV front to back.  Each one has it's own special type of fun involved. :aok
