Messed Up Airfield LayOuts
« on: June 03, 2008, 03:28:24 PM »
Yep. I found something else to whine about in Aces High.  Actually this has bothered me since the first week i played the game.   I'm talking about the layout of the runways.  Why are some bases in such difficult locations ?  Why would anyone put an airbase on a mountain top platue or surround an airbase with mountains.  Other bases (very few actually) are perfectly located and easy to land and take off from.
I think whoever situated the bases for Aces High got a little carried away with placing HARD to use bases on the maps.  Take the Arena Maps we started out with this June.  Barely one or two bases on the whole map were usable by heavy bombers.  Personally i think this amounts to an anti-bomber predjudice that seems to prevade the entire Aces High culture.  But without bombers, the game would Suck.
Any future maps should take bombers and their airfield requirements more seriously.

He's got a point.

Some map builders give little to no consideration about the realities of airfields in WW2.

Airfields in WW2 were almost always in flat, open areas without large cliffs around multiple sides.*

In AH on several maps you will find a field directly against a 45-degree slop of a mountain (one tile flat, next tile 45 degrees).

On some maps it is just stupid.

I'm glad, however, that the majority of fields do not do this. Those that do are just dumb IMO.

* = rising cliffs, I mean. Some had drop-offs that weren't much of a problem

Why does it seem that every single one of your posts are about how the game is too hard and should be made easier?

This has what's drawn my ire.
Personally i think this amounts to an anti-bomber predjudice

HTC has given buffs plenty of consideration. Some might say a bit too much.

There's always at least one runway you can take off from in heavy bombers.  If there isn't, I reckon posting about it in the bugs forum would get HTC's attention.

Have you ever tried attacking a formation of buffs with a reasonable ok guy at the helm? Your stuffed, through and through, unless you really know what your doing. Think thats Anti bomber?

Every player can fly 3 bombers at once
He actually gun himself while doing it
He is able to shoot all guns pointing towards enemy at the same time, all by himself alone
He can fly with full throttle all the time,  when combined with some alt making intercepts more difficult
And on some maps he can lift off from a 5k " airbase on a mountain top platue" which is actually an advantage....
He can drops with an uncanny pinpoint accuracy with an easy-mode bombsight from any altitude

Yup, pretty much anti-buff.  :aok

I know 'I can do it with my eyes closed' sounds cliche, but literally anyone can calibrate our laser accurate bombsight with their eyes closed. Which is why I like the AvA/old style bombsight better.

I remember the old method in the MA, and I prefer it as well. Flayd & I were part of a bomber wing in our squad just for the reason that it was a challenging process to calibrate the old way. Not everyone could do it.

The real question is who is this guy when he's on his home computer versus his work computer?

Do we even know his ingame handle yet? Is he even past his 2 week freebie yet?

Regardless of his bomber comment, I agree that putting airfields with steep hills at the ends of several runays is illogical, unrealistic, unhistoric, and just dumb.

a little tip,  use 25% fuel , build your speed up with flaps fully up.   Then hit one notch nearer the end of the runway.  Pull up to 1000feet and your drones WILL form up.

It isnt hard and I do hope you will refrain from posting such negative posts when you clearly do not know what you are talking about.

I can take off with lancs from ANY field and any direction you challenge me to.

The bomber pilot in AH gets 2 "extra lives" in the form of the drones.  Not only increases the amount of firepower but also bombs.
