anyone know a glaring reason not to?

I got a bike expert going with me and giving me the thumbs up or down once he sees it, also he's going to work on it free, I pay parts and learn. the caliper I have a line on... $65; the petcok rebuild is a kit and easy according to both the seller and my guy...

thank you GWB money I just need some leathers for safety, and the left over will pay for a helmet at least.

Save your money and get a better condition and more recent manufactured bike. Parts and service will be MUCH easier than a 25 year old bike. I'm speaking seriously. I don't care what brand of bike you want to ride, just make sure it's going to be safe and reliable.

Actually for $500 that aint that bad as long as it's a runner.  XJ550s are pretty bulletproof and 18,000 miles is pretty low for a 25 year old bike.  Only thing is, cant really tell from the pics but the exhaust cans look kinda rusty, strangely though.....the downpipes don't.  Wondering if the exhaust (right side esp) was replaced from a scrap yard after a crash. Without a close up pic though it's hard to tell if it's rust or just dirt / heat colouring.

25 years old, chances are it's been crashed at some point in it's life......the frames on XJs were never the strongest on the planet and have a habit of bending in odd places, look for scrapes on bar ends, mirrors, footpegs etc.  If it has been crashed the only way to tell if it's bent is take it appart and put the frame on a jig.  Of course, if you need to steer left in order to go in a straight line then that's a pretty good indicator as well.

I get what you are saying, from what I have heard it is a more reliable bike than some of the 330's and 250's I have been looking at in the same price range. I am real lucky the guy I know is going to work on it.

The seller says it needs some good cleaning, I guess I'll see how bat it really is.

I'd love to get something a bit newer, but money is so tight I am actually spending my stimulus check on this to SAVE :eek money. gas has been over $4 for a few weeks now (I spent $4.26/gallon a few days ago), I'm spending about $6/day on gas just to and from work and on my salary that is a lot of money. with a bike like this I can get 40+ MPG and spend just over 1.5 gallons a week probably.

Was in Little Rock with the wife yesterday.  Pulled through a service station to get a car wash.  There it sat beside a gas pump....a pristine, black Triumph.

Brought a tear to my eye, let me tell ya.   I'm still drooling.

nope, seller was full of baloney. it wouldn't start and he wouldn't even try to start it for us.

looks better.  Dont like the handlebar arrangement but hey, that's personal preference.  Bigger engine is always better and this one has even less mileage than the last.

The sticky throttle he mentions isn't an issue unless it's a "jamming" throttle.  Frankly, on long trips I've wished my throttle would stick on every bike I've ever owned......cruise control is rare on bikes.
