I say a P-38. I know its very fragile and your guts and brains will often be splattered all over the cockpit. But its a historical very important airplane and can be very effective when flown a certain way. Mind you Im still trying to find out "what way" that is. But the nose guns are lethal as hell and you can kill from long range with it.
Ive been trying to fly it as I would a 109. Pick your turn fights, pick you BnZs, and keep it within certain speed ranges. And it has such long legs you can up from a ways off and enter a fray with a lot of energy to draw on. If the damage model wasnt so bad with the 38 I'll bet I'd fly it 50% of the time.
