I don't say dude as much as I used to, back when I used it a lot chicks didn't say it. To those who the word is part of their native vernacular dude can mean many different things depending on how it's said. There was a funny part in the movie Baseketball where Trey Parker and Matt Stone have a conversation using only the word dude. It's only a small exageration.

And we can tell when people use it now if they really grew up with it or if it's just an affectation. It's kind of neat now to hear a successful professional use the word with the finesse that only a died in the wool dude can.
