Windows XP SP3

Should I install this yet or not?  I've been holding off.  The system ain't broke so I'm not sure if it's needed.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. My mother installed SP3 without thinking about it (new SP? gotta be good, she said) and immediately she got BSDs left and right when typing. She uses a transcription pedal and types in a word processor. Something with the USB drivers, or who-knows-what, was causing untold BSDs. It was so bad she couldn't even burn a CD-ROM to back up recent files in case she needed to restore it.

Luckily, a System Restore save point was made, I reverted to before SP 3 was installed, and viola, problem no longer there.


So whatever else it might do, it's not perfect.

Yes but...

CAUTION:  If you have an HP Pavilion, HP Media Center or Compaq Presario desktop computer that has an AMD processor, your PC might encounter a startup problem after installing SP3 (or SP3 will not download from Windows Update). Before attempting to install SP3, install sp37394 - Microsoft Windows XP SP3 Upgrade Utility for systems with AMD processors . 


I had nothing but trouble with sp3, it caused an endless reboot cycle and i could only (luckily) start my pc in safe mode to perform a restore.

It was/is a problem with HP computers with amd processors. Here's the fix i had to use before it would work.

I installed it, no probs at all.

Im running an Intel Core 2 Q6600 and X1950Pro.

I've heard that also about HP and Compac with AMD processors.  I've had no problems whatsoever with and AMD FX-55 running on a Gigabyte motherboard or my current 9850 quad core with an Asus motherboard.  Neither of these were HP or Compac and were not off the shelf systems though.

installed on 1 box for a week, only issue was outlook express popping up the compact mailboxes dialog every time its closed down. quick reg fix and it was fine, no further problems so rolled out to another 16 boxes which havent had any problems since. i'd say do it :)

I didn't install it up until about 2 weeks ago (after I did a re-format).  Have had no problems since with SP3.

Lets say I install SP3, and have no problems whatsoever with it.  What are the benefits to installing it?

On top of the HP/AMD problems with SP3, there's also problems if you're using Symantec security products. Go to the site below to read Their explanation and download the patch if you use any of their products. I believe there's a list of the affected products on the page also.

I loaded SP3 on a dual Xeon system with no real problems, (I don't and will never run any
symantec products), a couple of days after it was made available for download.

The only problem I came across was an extremely minor glitch in using a boot screen program called 'Bootskin', which replaces your boot screen with a custome screen of your choice. The program still worked, but it showed the original MS boot screen for about a half-a-second before switching to my custom screen. A very minor annoyance at worst. Other then that, everything else seems to be working just fine.

SP3 doesn't have any real major updates in it. You can go to MS and read about SP3 and decide if you might need it. I'd say if you're not in any real rush or need, that wait a bit to make sure all the bugs are ironed out.

If you have SP3, disable QoS RSVP.
