Looking for a new monitor...
« on: June 06, 2008, 06:30:26 PM »
I'm shooting for a 22" LCD. My choice at this point is a Westinghouse 22" with a 3000:1 contrast ratio and 2MS response time. How's that?

Sounds similar to the one I just got:  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824005097

I love mine.

The Westinghouse I found is only $300 at my local best buy :) They have another Westinghouse that is $330 thats 24", but it's got a 1000:1 contrast ratio and a 8MS response time.

I've got two questions though.

The first one's kinda stupid; it's good to have a HIGHER contrast ratio, correct? Should the ratio be closer to 'infinite:1' or '1:1'? I'm thinking the former but I'm not sure.
Second, I've got 1 NVidia Ge8600 video card; can I keep my old monitor (a 17" HP) and hook up both, or do I need dual video cards for that?

Higher contrast (infinity:1) is better.  At 8ms response you'll likely get blurring or ghositng while gaming.  5ms is the minimum you want.  Mine is 2ms and I have no issues whatsoever.

Does your video card have two outputs?  If so you should be able to use them both but I'm not sure how using different size monitors works (I've ever only used one).

I would read reviews on the LCD before purchasing.  As Tomshardware reported aobut a year ago, some LCD manufacturers fudge the numbers on the response times.  IMHO I've never like Westinghouse LCDs.  I generally recommend Dell, Viewsonic, or Samsung...Acer maybe.

What don't you like about them?

I went and bought the Westinghouse and it shadows horribly. How's LG?

Like I said in my first post, I've got an LG and it's awsome.  Check the link (in my first post).

I'm not sure about LG as a brand, but a solid 5 eggs on 100+ reviews can't be wrong, good warranty and specs.  What I like about the big 3 are their quality.  I'm a graphic designer by trade and those three brands offer excellent quality in color and especially construction, generally offer better warranty as well.  I'm generally pretty an*l about monitors as in my profession, what appears on screen needs to be as close to what the the producted is going to end up looking like.

I've seen the one's as Best Buy and have noted poor color response and unimpressive contrast ratios (even though they were rated high).  I also look at the base/casing of the monitor.  If it appears weak/cheap, what makes me think they're going to put good components inside that?

However, what may be unacceptable to me, may work just fine for someone without as high as standards as me.  So, I stress it's just my opinion.

My impression from that LG is that it is pretty good.  I try and stay away from sub $280* 22"ers.

* Note this is Newegg prices.  Expect to pay $50-100 for Best Buy 'crap'.

The LG I was looking is advertised  2MS response time & 10,000:1 contrast ratio... I think I'll go with that. The Dell's they have are pretty old, it would seem.... the one I recall looking at was 800:1 contrast and 5MS response.

This is their lower end model

A true 10,000:1 contrast ratio is excellent.

Acer has put out some good monitors on the market lately. Using a Acer AL2423W currently and am very happy with it, 24" widescreen with 1920x1200 resolution. No ghosting at 6ms, great colors and contrast. In fact it's the best colors and contrast I've seen on a LCD.

My experience with LG products have been bad so I stay away from them with one exception, the LG vacuum cleaner I've got seem to do the job ok.   :lol

Ja.
Great color, no noticeable ghosting, and it's much sharper than the Westinghouse as well.
