BPF Corsair Mk II
« on: June 08, 2008, 04:26:58 AM »
This is a Corsair Mk II (F4U-1A) of the British Pacific Fleet in 1945, based on HMS Victorious and probably operated by 1836 NAS. The markings were designed to resemble US markings in order to prevent friendly fire incidents with US planes and gunners. By this time FAA Mk IIs had each accumulated thousands of hours of operational use and had very faded paintwork as a result.

I've uploaded the skin to http://www.ah-skins.com/ if you want to take a closer look.

Hey Greebo,

Here is another pic of one of 1836 SQDN. Corsair II's I had in the stash.

It was while they were on HMS VICTORIOUS with the BFP sometime in early 1945. Believe this is the aircraft that had "Betty Boop" on the nose. Pic was taken when the aircraft landed aboard the USS ESSEX CV-9.

I considered doing that one Jester, in many ways its a better subject. Trouble is I'd have to guess the airframe number and I couldn't make sense of the noseart. It looks like Betty's head, upper torso and folded arms, possibly there's a dark dress and her legs below, but what's that blob to the right, a flag maybe? I even Googled Betty Boop to see if there was a similar picture, but no joy.

Couldn't find anything on "Betty Boop" in my stash but did find this - thought you might be interested.

Thanks guys, I'm going to fiddle around with the skin a bit more before submitting it. Looks like the BBS problems have delayed the current batch of skins, so there's probably plenty of time before the next cut off point. The paint covering the old markings needs to stand out a bit more I think.

l may extend the paint chipping on the wingroots like on the picture of 147 Jester posted. I'm toying with the idea of converting the skin to that aircraft anyway. The photo below seems to show the same aircraft when it was flown by a Lt Cole of 1830 Squadron on HMS Illustrious. If you look carefully at Jester's photo you can see where the the old "Q" and "147" were overpainted. I can use some artistic license on the noseart so the only problem now is the airframe number.

Sheppard's aircraft is popular with profile artists, skinners and modellers he was the only FAA pilot to make ace flying Corsairs exclusively. Trouble is though I can't find a photo of his plane anywhere. Nowadays I'll only work from secondary sources like profiles as a last resort.

I've posted before regarding weathering, check out the threads below. If anyone has any questions not covered there I'm happy to share what I know. I'll post something regarding fabric effects later.

Hi Greebo

I am not into plane skins.  Too old.

But, I have studied WWII Aviation, having lived through WWII.

You do a super job with Fleet Air Arm aircraft.  Especially with the SWPA FAA markings and paint.

Keep up the good work.

Wish you would do an SEAC B-24.

Excellent job with this Corsair.

Cheers mate
