Bombers Dogfighting Fighters
« on: February 27, 2000, 03:53:00 PM »
Yesterday, while flying a spitfire, I attacked two B-17 bombers at 20,000 feet.  They began dogfighting me, executing 45-60 degree turns, while shooting guns at me all the while.  Obviously, they were manned guns.

I downed one and was downed by the other.

I have a problem with b-17s being able to fire their guns while violently maneuvering at such high bank angles.  A related issue is the ability to continue to fire even with a wing missing and the plane spinning madly.

I know that brand W addressed this issue by disabling bombers guns above a certain G loading or bank angle.

HTC, could you consider this issue?

disabling me guns in a bank?
are you DAFT?
once the tail runs dry the only way I have of getting those dweebs who insist on pressing a low 6 attack is to bank so I can get the upper turret on target.
BAD idea

Disableing guns is a bad idea but B-17s should not be able to turn with a fighter at all.

A 60 deg bank angle is only a 2 g turn.

The "Brand W" way of doing it is a non-solution.  It provides the same restrictions on side gunners (without much support) and strapped in tailgunners in fighters.
Shooting from a heavily maneuvering buff is not easy; accuracy is greatly reduced.  So in a sense it already is limiting.
The way the autopilot is now, you have to be really careful (unless you have a gunner) about when to jump to gunner after maneuvers.  I've lost quite a few heavies by split-essing on my prey, only to jump the gun and break something.

In real life a B17 did not dogfight enemy fighters haphazardly like you can see in the arena.  On the B17's there were 10 crewman who wanted to go home just like everyone else. None of them shrugged off getting shot down with a  "hey let's whack these guys and if we get shot down we'll just reup in a fresh B17 from field 14..."
The "virtual world" arena allows people to use aircraft in ways never intended and at times never permitted by the laws of nature.
No death = no fear = arena perversions of WWII aircombat.

Me? I just try to out dogfight that wild bellybutton 17 pilot. If I fail? I get a new plane, climb, shoot, rinse and repeat.

Good point Westy!  The crew would probably shoot the pilot or bail out.
