So, why are gas prices so high?
« on: June 11, 2008, 01:25:09 AM »
I heard its cuz the hippies wont let us drill for oil in Alaska and the Gulf of Mexico. And China and Cuba are drilling in the Gulf and the Atlantic and sucking OUR oil reserves dry. This is all because of our Congress from what I've heard. They've made it where WE cant drill in our own country and our own waters, but China AND Cuba, both known for not caring at all about enviromental situations are drilling there. Why dont we just kick em out? Why dont we just drill for oil in our own country. Because democrats and Congress wont let us. This is getting out of hand... I swear....

The wind for their watcher, the wave for their shroud,
Where palm and pandanus shall whisper forever,
A requiem fitting for heroes

Speculation.  Remember the good old days when OPEC controlled prices?

Oil execs needing to buy more Cuban cigars, Dom Perignon, and, er, entertainment.

Basically the same stuff many O'Club members would do with the jack.

Oh, toss in some mansions, cars, vacations, and never have to work again after this gig sort of thing too.

Angels there's some good posts in the other threads where your question is answered as well as it's most likely to be in here..  In the 'Windfall tax' thread, and in others before it.  The simplest and least questionable factor is that the US dollar is shrinking.

i'm guessing you don't need to spend much of your income on fuel?

it only appears to be cheap if you don't need to buy it, or buy much of it. if you depend on affordable fuel prices to earn your living...commercial fisherman, truckdriver or whatever, or have to spend a large chunk of your income to commute long distances it probably wont seem so cheap.

Many are prediciting the price won't stop increasing until it hits between $7-$10/gal. This should make the Global Warming Alarmists happy since oil use will decline. Probably see a lot more motorcycles/scooters on the road. Have to admit I won't miss seeing those giant SUVs barreling down the road while the driver is looking at the mirror putting on makeup.

Luckily I live about a mile from my job, so I walk to and from work unless I've been reading the O'Club and am running late. The guys that will get pounded are the commuters, but I haven't noticed an increase in carpooling (the traffic reports still show a backlog at the Bay Bridge every day) although I understand BART ridership is up slightly.

Demand is dropping quite substantially in the U.S., however the Chinese government is able to take the monstrous number of excess trade dollars that it accumulates and keep gas prices a couple of bucks lower than we pay so world demand keeps increasing.

Too bad "free" trade with them is a one way street, it would be nice if we could ship some SUV's over there, but they require that most autos be built in country, I wonder when that protectionism is going to devastate their economy like we are told it would ours.

Did anyone think that we may run out of gas one day?
It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)
