The US imports very little refined product from Mexico, about 100,000 barrels a day. That compares to US imports of 1.2 million barrels of crude from Mexico a day. The US actually exports more refined product to Mexico than it imports, with exports running at about 250,000 barrels a day.

Increasing refinery capacity in Mexico makes sense. Mexico is a net oil exporter (about 1.5 million barrels a day) but has less refinery capacity than it needs to meet its own consumption. Mexico consumes about 2 million barrels of product a day, but can refine only 1.5 million. Mexico is in the position of producing crude, exporting it, then having to import the finished product for its own domestic use.

and yet we drive across the border into Mexico in our cars and pickups, to buy gas at 1 dollar cheaper per gallon than in the u.s. so if they have to import refined product where is it coming from that they get it cheaper than we do? our taxes only represent .40 cents of that dollar, and they must have paid transportation cost to move that oil here then send refined product back.

It's cuz of Congress you guys know that right? Before the democrat congress, gas was much cheaper, we could drill more in the U.S. What people assume isn't even true, that this is all George Bush's fault like everything else, like Katrina, like 9/11....

You remind me of my wife,  you ask a question then tell me the answer.  What bill did congress pass that raised gas prices?  If you have any specifics you could share about congress being the cause to high gas prices, I would love to see them.

Well, here's the NO Zones in the U.S. where there is a large amount of oil we could be getting and refining.

These pictures prove what exactly?  What  have they done to increase fuel prices, was there a certain bill they have passed in the last few years? By your logic, when the democrats took the majority, gas prices magically increased? I think what your seeing is the result of 4 years of no checks and balances, hell even Sean Hannity talks about how bad the republican congress was.

Have to agree in principal as I certainly believe it was 8 years of Clinton's foreign policy that led to the terroist threat to world security we face today.

Mexico subsidises the cost of gasoline. When you fill up in Mexico, the gasoline costs the same, but rather than the government taking money off you in taxes, they actually give you money in subsidies.

Make the most of it, though, there are reports the Mexican government may end the subsidies soon.
