Nonstop film issues

Im a professional videomaker. I do weddings, events, Industrials, and whatnots. Now that Im caught up in my work I'd like to edit some AH videos, "I know I could produce some terrific stuff".

Problem is Ive never really got the film viewer/compressor to work right. On my gameing puter, this one the one I play on. I can get the film viewer to work OK as long as I compress the film to MV1. The problem is two-fold. 1st I dont have the time to use this puter for compressing and doing video work. I use it to play the game. 2nd I cant compress to any of the Canopus formats and since I have a Canopus based NLE computer I would find this desireable.

OK so I download the game onto my editing computer which is XP-2 OS. Ya figure I'd have no problems right? Well on my XP based system I cant get the film viewer to compress at all. Not to any format. When I try to save to AVI the program just freezes up and I get an Invalid or old format film message. Im able to actually play the film but I cant save it to any video format in order to cut it in any of my NLEs.

Ive been making video since the start of DV and I sure wish I could find a way to work with my AH films.

Thanks for any help. Ive tried going to properties in film viewer and setting compatability. In my XP system it doesnt even have XP listed for compatability where'as it is listed on my Vista system.

Most people use a "capture" software to make films. Fraps, or Camtasia Studio are a couple of them. You run the software to capture the screen action of the film viewer, then edit it with what ever software you like to mess with.

Thnks for the response. What kind of capture software? I found something called "Fraps" but its $37 to buy and I wouldnt want to spend that without a recomendation. Thanks again <S>

yup, Fraps is the one most use. They have a free version, but your limited in in the lenght of time for your capture (you have to ptece a bunch of things together), and it has the "name" across the top of the capture. Camtasia Studio is another one, and it might be free also.

Asking in the films and screen shots thread may get you better answers.

Fraps is the way to go, most of your clips will be under 30 seconds or so anyway, so try the free version and see how you like it, the full version is much better tho, and there is no watermark in full version.

OK I bought the Fraps thing. The problem is, first off, the program blue screened a very stable system. Then I get the computer to reboot, go back into the game, and whenever I film with Fraps my frame rate goes way down and the game is actually unplayable. Ive tried capturing with different frame rates and film sizes and still no good. I have a dual core system with 2 gigs ram and always got 60 fps in the game with no issues. The AH film recorder never caused a frame rate issue.

Any thoughts? Thank you.

i don't use fraps in game, record with game in game use fraps in film veiwer

I have purchased fraps and it's a great program.

I use it to record while playing the game.  Use your video editing program to crop out the text buffer.

If you specify that you want to capture at 30fps, then your framerate in the game or film viewer will drop to 30 fps.  You can tell fraps to display your actual framerate in any corner of your screen.  Yellow framerate number will indicate actual framerate while not in capture mode, and a Red framerate number for your framerate in capture mode.

A duo core intel processor is highly recommended for high resolution capturing.

Fraps has never given me trouble in game or out, i just don't use it in game much. It will drop your frame rate in game tho, i would suggest useing it in film veiwer over in game.

also if you have fram rate issues, i would suggest useing fsautostart to shut down processes so AH can run with more memory.

Well I think I have it straightened out. What I did was turned down my video card performance thingy. I tried using auto-start but kept getting error messages. Still I have my memory usage pretty bone dry already. This Vista is just an all around dog of a OS but its strange how I can get AH film to operate on my Vista system and not my XP-ll system.

Yesterday was a big mess. I did something to my AH file and couldnt get the game to open with my newer log on name and password. So I had to reinstall the game and lost all my settings for my aircraft. I had custom fidgeted a lot of my keyboard shortcuts to run well with my Saitek profiles so I had to mess with all that. And then all my airplane view settings, gun settings, target sights...ect I lost them on all the airplanes. So that was my day. I didn't even get to play until late at night.

But Im able to use fraps without a total drain on resources. One thing tho. Unlike AH film in Fraps you only get the one view.

i has always used Fraps
only time i get problems now is because since the last update the film viewer
uses more resources and my system is pretty much on the limit for what i need.

It should work on xp easy depending on how good it is.

Use it in the film viewer. You can adjust stuff like the plane angles, I could show you a video I used made by fraps. What I usually do is, find the most desired angle, zoom in, make sure everything's perfect, THEN press play and R. What you also might want to do is, make it only at about half speed (cuz sometimes it's really jerky) and then double it in the Movie maker. (also, I would suggest you get Windows Movie Maker, helps you edit movies.)
