Can't get mic working
« on: June 12, 2008, 09:52:11 PM »
I've been dogged by this problem every since I installed my SB audigy 2 zs card to use the game port. When I got my new stick I uninstalled it and went back to onboard sound. Everything was working well except the mic. It is tunnelled and scratchy. I tried getting it to work for 2 days but then gave up. It was echoing and still scratchy. Today I reinstalled the sb card and it is still bad. I get horrendous feed back and I can't get my system to recognize the headphones and mute the speakers. Also with the mic there is a dull hum constantly. I unplugged the mic and the sound went to normal. I really would like to go back to onboard sound. I'll take any advice I can get for either sound system.

if you can use a dedicated sound card rather than the onboard one. The dedicated one should use less system resources.
have you tried a new or different mic? Have you tried using the sound recorder in windows? is it clear in there or still noisy and tunnel like? In AH have you tried the Use Wave In option?

Maybe the mics shot.  Mine did that once and I replaced it.  It's fine now.

I've tried two different mics. Going to try a different head set tonight. I tried the sound recorder in windows if you are talking about the one that is accessed through the control pane and then selecting the voice tab. The voice sounds better but in the recorder it echos even after adjustment.

In DxDiag, I see two sound card tabs. They both reference the same card. Is that an issue. If so how do I get rid of the second one.

If you've got a sound card plugged in, disable the onboard sound in the BIOs and uninstall the driver for it.

If you want to use the onboard sound, take the soundcard out and uninstall it's driver.

Sound conflicts are one of the biggest headaches in Windows.

Also, when you were in the control panal, did you click the advanced tab and see if it was better with or without boost enabled?

One last thing to try, go into DxDiag and turn sound acceleration down to 75%.

Is this for USB headphone set or one that plugs directly into the back of the soundcard using the ports?

Okay, got it working. Here's what I did and thought. I took a break and layed down for about 30 minutes. I started thinking that neither the sound card nor the onboard card were working correctly. At least concerning the Mic. What do they have in common? Windows xp. When I deleted the sound card drivers originally I used the add/remove software program in the control panel. It asked me if I wanted to remove all devices or programs associated with the drivers. I said yes. I think it deleted part of the OS. So I restored it back to April and it worked. Unfortunately, now my catylist control center for my ATI card won't work. Something about a command line missing or corrupted. Uhg!!!

Get Acronis trueimage or similar imaging system so you can do a real image of your working system. System restore sucks.
