P-38 Twin .50 cal Gunpods
« on: June 13, 2008, 07:07:08 AM »
I don't know how many of y'all have played or seen a WW2 sim called Il-2 1946, but it is very life like,
and the later on the P-38L gunpods can be added for strafing...I would like to see these on the P-38L
because it would be 8 .50 cal MG and a 20mm Cannon all firing at the same time :rock
PLEAS HTC find it in your great hart to add this :pray :pray :pray ;)

Ok so first you start out by mentioning another sim (its like talking about your girlfriend to another girl)
So kind of a backhanded dis at HTC
And then you want something that by your description, we don't even know if it was used in WWII.
Or if it was when, no specifics on how much weight it added, etc.

And now your wondering why people are raining on your parade.

You might want to try citing historical usage for this kind of thing.
What theaters was it deployed in, when, who was it used by.
And give your references, as many are NOT as good as they might seem.
Some are just plain wrong. A picture is always good.

In short, you want something, right, so do the work first.

FDMEN,

Il-2 is pretty and has a better damage model, but that's about it. Bad flight model, poor mission design, stupid AI that went to the Waldron school of "dogfighting" and all the aircraft essentially fly the same.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

IL2 also fudges facts on the modeling sometimes. Not a reliable source. Just because *they* have a certain weapon doesn't mean it was really in much use in the war.

That said, there WERE some P-38 modifications to the nose guns, some tests and whatnot, but for the most part these were not standard and not widespread.

Also, considering the large ammo load of the nose guns, I don't see much need for the gunpods. 4 in the nose is worth 8 in the wings.

Production models were never fitted with gun pods or used them at any time during the war.

The only P-38L to have 12x .50 calibers in the nose was a test bed P-38L that had 8x .50 calibers mounted in the nose and 4 additional .50 calibers mounted in gunpods (eac gun pod 2x .50 calibers).  It never went beyond a single test bed aircraft.  There was also the test bed P-38L that was equipped with 3x .60 caliber machine guns but nothing  came out of it.

There is something else to note, both of these test aircraft were modified after the war.

You look at strafer planes like the A20s, the B-25 G/H/Js, etc, and you find out the more guns they pack into the nose, the smaller the ammunition load per gun they usually have. I guess they figure you don't need as much ammo with that many guns. Make a few passes, go home.

They've got something on the order of 200 rpg in many strafers.

Now, take the P-38, if you had 2x the guns jammed in that nose you're cutting into ammo storage, on top of that you're splitting the available storage amongst the guns.

I'd rather have 4x50cal with 500rpg (2000rds) than I would have 8x50cal with [for example] 150 rpg (1200rds)

EDIT: The above does not nullify my lust for a 12-gun B-25J strafer model  :D

If we are going to have "PODS" on the P-38 then what we REALLY need is something useful like the "AMBULANCE PODS" as in the pic below:

That way we could haul fellow wounded pilots out of enemy territory, steel the Enemy's Sheep on midnight raids, pack up the Squadron bar and BBQ and take them on those really LONG missions - stop on the way back and have a Beach Party or something.   :D

14 .50cal if HTC models the capability to lock the turret forward as was often done on the strafers.

That is incorrect. They'd have to be WAY bigger to fit them all in there.  :devil
