in the 2008 Le Mans 24 hour race, the first six places were diesel powered cars by Audi and Peugeot.

Draw your own conclusions.

Diesel cars win!

I like the way that they seem relaxed when running.  Its low engine noise won't tire drivers.

With more and more efficient petrol engine technology, they could swing back in the near future. Hoping to go watch it next year! :D

Cummins makes some nice racing engines.  Too bad diesel is so much more expensive than regular gas.

It's all a result of the rules package, which is rigged to favor diesels.  The organizers allow diesels more displacement, more boost, and a few other advantages that make it impossible for gas engines to compete.  Make the rules the same for both fuels and it's no contest, diesel is not competitive.

That would be my conclusion as well.

Agree, it is getting to more about being "Green" and Environmentally Friendly than it is about Racing anymore.
Rules should be the same for each Class of Cars.

Then you'd just have one class...

I'm not sure how anyone can say Le Mans 2008 was not a race. The Peugeot LMP1 car was 3-4 seconds a lap faster than the Audi (both diesel), but the Audi beat them into 2nd and 3rd.

No conclusions to be drawn. Diesels get the benefit of a multitude of crutches, in the form of favorable regulations... Plus, this was just one class.
