Heh?
Personally I hate all these new supercomputers and everything...I think the worlds "fastest" computer should have to be based out of a regular desktop case, nothing more than that.

It will be installed at a US government laboratory later this year where it will monitor the US nuclear stockpile.

Two points

1.  Isn't this very similar to movie predictions involving a supercomputer set out to destroy the human race and build syborgs to send back to the past

2.  Couldn't this be done from a vista desktop running Office 2007 in access......or any type of cheap database for that matter?

2 - No.. I don't know much about programming, but I'd wager that at such a leading edge project, they would spare no effort in maximizing efficiency, and the most efficient solution will be custom programming for this specific application, not some bloated software optimized for something entirely different and compromised for a wide variety of tasks.. etc. :)

1 - The most prolific specialist I know on that topic is Kurzweil.. His honest to goodness prediction is that such a supercomputer and us homo sapiens sapiens will have merged by the time that happens.

When a blue-screen-of-death equates to a nuclear holocaust?  :lol I would hope they would use a specialised program for that.

Yeah I'm sure there'll be some special batch file that will kick off once the BSOD has revealed itself.  Or they'll just send someone out to the computer and power cycle it.
