Modelling some logistical realism into the arena
« on: December 06, 1999, 09:35:00 PM »
I think that the arena has some great concepts with the different types of factory complexes which add to the viability and prevelance of the use of strategic bombing in the game.  It is something which is sorely missed in other online sims.

I was thinking of taking the concept one step further.

Because fields further away from the "heartland" of a country exhibit much more logistical difficulties than nearby fields, it seems that flying sorties from far away fields should be somewhat more difficult without establishing adequate supply.

I propose this:

Create an object for the C-47 which represents between 25 to 50 pilots.  When a field is captured, no sorties can be flown from that base until a C-47 has come in and supplied it with pilots.  When the "stock" of pilots is depleted for a field, the same result.  If a pilot lands his plane at a field, then he should be able to replane and take off regardless of the pilot supply of the base.  Bases inside of a country's initial borders have an unlimited amount of pilots.  However, if they are recaptured from an invading country, no sorties can be flown until a C-47 delivers more pilots.

I have seen times when the Rooks have taken Field 1 from the Bishops directly after an arena reset, and held onto it with countless aircraft being flown from Field 1 until the next arena reset, many hours later.  With the addition the pilot supply logistical rules to the game, this type of historically unlikely scenario would be just as unlikely to occur in the arena.

These rules would foster the concept of achieving air superiority over key parts of airspace during an invasion.

They would also create more encouragement for pilots to form coordinated attacks as teams.

Good idea! I made a post before on resupplying fields. We also need recon(along with a reason to recon), and rescue missions. Dunno how to put it in the game , but I can hear it now  " Hey 13th help!! im being held captive at base 17!!!  " IMHO these are the type things that are gonna keep people attention and keep them paying.

However like I said before, HTC is doing a great job and are ,prob way ahead of us.

Just one problem, organization.
You do expect that you get that pilot to fly C-47 there, but it is already hard to get C-47 fly troopers to capture the base :P

Of course I would like to have this and that, but we have to keep in mind that we can't expect to have players do it. (in war they would be ordered, not begged to do it..)

And other thing, don't we need also road supply?

Ok Fishu, good points. But, consider this. Friday night Ice, Banex, and myself were taking bases over in knight land. I was in a b17, bane in a p51, ice in a c47. I bombed acks and rescources at the field. Bane patroled for fighters.  When all looked clear ice started making his way with the troops. Sure enough a fighter popped up(as it should). So bane and i (and several other bishops who made their way over) tried  to drag him away from ice.We knew if we shot him down he would respawn right back at the field and kill the troops. Wht should we be PENALIZED for shoting down a fighter?

As far as people not wanting to fly the c47 to resupply. IMHO when it becomes something that must be done , people will do it.
Furballs are getting old to us all and HTC has something planned Im sure. Just wish they would give us more details on the strat plans

Automated resupply convoys of trucks!

Put in a road system along with ressuply depots near (but not too near) the fields. You capture the field, and you get the nearby resupply base.

This has two bonuses: it gives one side ground targets to strafe (maybe with automated Flak Panzers for defense) and it drags the alt monkeys that play vulcher around the field a reason to go diving down.

Right now people are doing suicide runs in b-17s just to be magnets to take the attackers down and possibly take them out. An  automated ground target (in this case a truck convoy with some gunners) that fufills the same 'mission' but also has strategic importance is the way to go.
