Just happened to find this on U-tube. Pretty cool flick showing the majority of his awards/medals. When you look at the one picture of him when he was a fresh LT and realize just how young and small he was. Then you think of all he accomplished, it's just amazing. :salute

The thing you need to notice is that he won some of the medals, not just once, but numerous times.

Yeah, yeah............I have posted it here before. You knew it was coming. ;)
Audie( Pat to his friends) was also a great marksman even from youth.
He was also my Dad`s best friend. They grew up together.
My Dad is the tall guy in the back row. Audie is seated.

The one thing i wonder about now days is this. Do you think any of our children could do what he did at his young of an age? Would they have the conviction and drive to accomplish what he did and for the reasons he did?

Being an excellent marksman doesn't make you a hero by it's self. It takes a mental, moral, and personal command presence and commitment that i think very few of our children have now.

I would have loved to have met him and the fact that your father did and was his friend is pretty awesome. The end of his life wasn't very glamorous but his feats live on in legends. :salute

I am fairly sure there are kids in Iraq now doing pretty close the same thing Audie did just without as much fanfare. True, it's a different kind of war but I don't think courage is in short supply over there.

There is still a good streak of valor in many of those who serve in and outside of all kinds of uniforms. There is also a good portion of folks who also bear down and get to work taking care of family. You just don't hear about them as they are not news. All you hear about are the whiners and losers who make a scene about getting their handout or "work the system" in a particularly newsworthy manner. Had Murphy not acted as he had in combat you would have never heard about his family situation. It doesn't mean he wouldn't have had the same level of courage, just that you wouldn't hear about it.

Yep, Chuck Yeagers grandson did some heroic stuff in Iraq.  One thing that comes to memory is him throwing a live enemy grenade back into the house that it came out of.

Yes, I agree with that. I made that comment from a personal level from some of the exploits that he and my Dad shared in their youth.

Absolutely and will be talked about for quite some time to come I am sure.
What is not talked about so much in the open is his opinions on what he did and how he felt about them. Also the damage and misery he went through after the war trying to deal with his memories.

 He paid a hell of a price for it. Was haunted by memories, injuries, alcoholism.
