Why I think HO's are easier than they should be
« on: January 23, 2001, 04:58:00 PM »
HO's don't really bother me as much as I think they do some people... but here's my take on why they happen so often in AH. They are too easy. At 600MPH closer or thereabouts... I can't imaging you'd have much time to line up for a shot.. but it seems in AH that you do. Also... you can approach another plane at a 90 degree angle... and actually have time to get a decent snap shot off (though it is hard) Though I can't say I've ever tried... but I think this would be virtually imposible in a real plane moving at a high rate of speed. It's almost like the planes are moving slower than they should in relation to each other. I played a demo of BOB for a few minutes... (couldn't waste much time because I'd rather be in AH) but I think it captures the speed of the planes quite well... that is... you really have to be behind someone to hit them.

There are a couple of issues here.

First of all, I think Aces High has what I rate as the best combination of flight model and gunnery model I have every seen for a WWI flight sim.  If anything is to be a good indication of how "hard" it really was, I think AH is a decent simulation in that regard.

Second, net lag plays a part in the difficulty of HO attacks, or lack there of.  Namely, because of net lag, you will see the other guy fly directly toward you for longer than he really did, and vice versa for him.  It means that even though he pulled off and avoided the head-on at 500 yards, because of lag you don't see him turn at all.  The end result is that he is "easier to hit" because lag shows him going straight longer than he really would.

Of course there is always the "no fear of death" as well.  In real life, ain't no way no how a Zeke would try to HO my Jug in real life.  However, in AH, I see it quite a bit.  (I love when they try that...)

I think that is the biggest factor in the HO's. In Greg Boyingtons book he talks about an HO with a Zero. He said the advantage he had was that the bullet drop of the 20mm was so bad they actually dropped under his plane. His 50's didn't drop as bad. There were obviously HO's in WWII but the fear of collision limited them to a desperation measures most of the time I would think.

The real reason, in my opinion, that HO's are so easy in online sims/games is because there is no "OH toejam I'm going to die" factor.

The only time I worry about HOs is when I see a C-hog. It's like every one of them head right at your face and fire away.

Yes, I almost always turn to avoid the HO as soon as I think I am close enough where I don't give him the ability to turn right onto my tail (that old merge problem: Turn too soon and die, turn too late and die)

Not to hijak, but c-hogs uber cannons are the real HO problem... The other day 2 of them were flying towards me. I kept fast and level seeing that I was with freindlies and they would be dumb to engage out-numbered.

But I guess they figure, "If I can just snap a quick shot, I can probably put critical damage on that P-51D." They both did exactly that. First one missed, the second got 1 hit somewhere on my nose and knocked out oil and radiator. Both C-hogs then kept going where they were going because they had no interest in me in the first place.

But like I said.. "just a quick shot ruins that guy's day."

Perk the C-hog... It is a Dweeb HO machine
