How'd you pick your dog?

We are a goofy, fun loving family...we WEREN'T looking for a goofy dog...but we took one home both times.

(For Maximillian von Richthofen, 7 year old)  When we went to look at him at the breeder we were already apprehensive; the breeder had already told us on the phone that there was only one male left (6 females), so the picking on males was already slim.  We get there and the breeder's wife tells us she just gave him a bath (he was still a little wet), but he had already somehow got gum all over one of his paws. 

Within minutes, I see him dragging an empty dog food bag 10x his size aroung the yard, then rolling all over the yard getting grass clippings in his fur.  Then he ran over to the horses and wanted to pick a fight with one of them--got bored in :30 seconds, then went over and visited his mom (who acted like she knew what was going to happenend--and exchanged kisses).  Then he ran over to his dad's cage--then over to his sisters cage--with 6 tails wagging like electric metronones.  On the way home he fell asleep in my arms.  He has been a fun loving goofball ever since. 



(For Anke von Richthofen, 4 months old)  When we went to the breeder we had plenty of chices.  There were 8 girls in the girls kennel.  It was 8 tails wagging and all saying "PICK ME...PICK ME!!!"  We had it down to two, but as we were deciding, one sat down and stared off--the other kept licking our fingers and said "PICK ME...PICK ME!!!"  As soon as the breeder brought her out of the kennel she avoided the sidewalks and concrete and commenced to run right into a mudpuddle.  On the way home he fell asleep in my arms.


They are an excellent couple.  She already rules the roost (he doesn't know it yet).

I would normally hang out back behind Michael Vicks house after a party and pick one that was still breathing.

You're right, TMom -- just as in marriage a smart guy lets the wife choose him, he also lets the dog choose him.  Saves a lot of time and frustration.  Of course he has to be very selective and tactful to avoid disappointing a lot of women and dogs.

My last one chose me. Came to the door in a pouring rain shivering and cold making all kinds of noises. I opened the door and took pitty on her and brought her in, dried her off and gave her some food. She decided she liked me and snuggled up with me that night in bed and i said what the heck i'll keep her.

She never messed anything up, would eat just about anything, and showered me with affection when ever i came home.

I'd walk in the door and she'd start meowing and try to climb my pant leg, purring up a storm.........oh wait this is a doggie thread? OOOOpppssss

She was about 13 the vet said when she passed away, best cat i ever had.

My Mom moved in with my wife and I 16 months before she dide. During that time she had mentioned on several occasions that she would like to have another dog. Her's had died a year before. I was adiment not to have one.

One day about 2 months or so before she passed away she woke up in a really down mood and not feeling well at all. While she was resting I told my wife I was goiing out a while and would be back later. She asked where I was headed and I told her to get mom a dog. She said she was going to. So off we went on a dog hunt.

After looking at all the local shelters for a small dog , we bought a paper. We decided we would by her a shi-tzu. We found a 10 week old puppy and went to see it. We fell in love with Brinkley right off. He was lovable and extremly cute.

We paid for him and took him home. When we got home Mom was just waking from a nap. I stood in the kitchen while they brought her to the back porch. She rounded that corner to go thru the kitchen to the back and her eyes lit up. SHe just fell in love with Brinkley.

He stayed with my Mom at her feet or right beside her bed or in it until she passed away. He was NEVER far from her and was very protective of her. STrange how he just knew.

At any rate we always knew that when Mom passed Brinkley would be ours. We've had him since we brought him home for mom and he is the joy of the house alot of time. Since then we bought a female for him as he was depressed after Mom died and everything settled down and all the people were gone.

We have Brinkley , Bailey , Lilly (one of thier kids) and Cookie. We love em all.

i have had a bunch of breeds through my life, all the typical ones, Sheppard's, rotties,huskies, ect...
 but once i got my female American pitbul Terrier, she made all the other dogs i have had, and others that i knew, seem like they were just playing at the dog role,

its sad because so many people are  biased against Pitts, they have no idea!!  we love dogs for certain qualities they posses, like there unconditional love, zest for life, desire to please its master...   

if you were to take all dogs and form a pyramid with the best "all around" towards the top, there is only one dog that sits at the pinnacle and thats the American Pitbull Terrier, and he sits so far above the rest, he is beyond ALL breeds.

of course this is just my humble opinion, (well maybe not so humble).

WOW freaky. My new upstairs neighbor started moving in today. She has a pure bred male Husky and a pure bred female silver Doberman. Both are from a rescue shelter in chicago. The original owners gave them up because they were moving out of the country. They have their papers, shots, the whole 9 yards. Friendly as heck dogs also which is always nice to see when they move into an apartment.

When I picked my German Shepherd puppy we did a few tests on him to see if he was alert, fearful, that kinda thing- we dropped car keys behind him to see if he was afraid of noise, then put him on his back and checked to make sure he didn't snarl, held a piece of food to see if he'd keep his focus... We ended up with what looked like a bright, well adjusted puppy...or so we thought.

His true colors didn't surface until he was 4-5 months old. We'd take him to this dog park to socialize him with other dogs, and as he reached puberty he develped an attraction for other male dogs- he was definately gay, and praticed his gayness with other male dogs whenever he had the chance. Finally it got to be too much, especially since he seemed to prefer being the catcher, so we had to have him put down. It was sad, but really, who wants a homosexual dog?
