5" manned flak
« on: June 25, 2008, 11:35:17 AM »
IMO, the manned 5" guns are overpowered. The other flak doesn't kill you in one hit (normally), but you sometimes get killed before you're even in icon range. Doesn't it piss you off to make it through the auto flak and the marauding fighters, only to get killed in one shot by a manned 5"? Come on HTC, make CV vs CV wars fun by making it so we don't die in 1/2 a second.

37MM flack kills you in 1 shot. (manned flack at-least.)

Yeah, but it takes skill to hit a maneuvering fighter at 5k with a manned ack though

Shoot, it's hard to hit them past 1k...

Still, 5'' flack should only be able to hit you at about 3.5k though. They should change it to that.

Ummm ...

The 5"/38 could project a 55 pound (25 kg) projectile for ranges up to 18,200 yards (16.6 km). In its antiaircraft role, it had a ceiling of 37,200 feet (11,300 m) at 85 degrees elevation.

Plus the 5"/38's also uses a radar proximity fuse - THAT is what makes them so deadly. If the gunner had to set each fuse to the predicted target alt before firing. Would be a lot harder system to use but I imagine something could be set up like is used with shore bombardment with the big Cruiser guns.

What's your point?  Just because you might not have the skill to pull it off, don't assume nobody else can either.

yes it's easy, I can get lucky now and hit guys 5k out. If I can do that it must be easy, but then you have to think we have people flying Lanstukas to sink CV's so i think it's fine the way it is.

Those guns are badazz !!!

I love when you get a CV passing a CV ... I jump in those bad boys and reek havoc.

Bottom line tho Pannono ... 5" guns were lethal in WWII, just as they are in here. It's all about the radio proximity fuse. I just had a discussion with a guy in the MW arena on the same subject.

He said ... "How can a guy shoot me when I am going 500 mph" ... it took me 10 minutes to explain to him that the 5" didn't DIRECTLY hit him ... someone used some good Kentucky windage ... lobbed one out in front of him and the proximity fuse took care of the rest.
