i think score is a good thing because without score there would be no reason for the game. think about it. when you were first starting u wanted to look to see who was the best pilot in the game. and at the time the number 1 ranked guy to  you was the best. if there was no score then there would be no point in the game but to just fly and shoot down people. thats fun but it never gives the new people anything to strive for. if they dont have a way to become first then it makes the game pointless to play. instead of rank how they do now, i think they should like they do in halo where  you have generals and major and strike comanders and that type of rank. there for a new player can look up the generals and ask them for help. score is what makes a game challenging and gives new players something to achieve. taking it off the front news wont do anything but not attract new players.

Don't remove the score rankings, but add the other suggestions.  E.G. players get to submit short films (say 30sec tops) of the great stuff that gets pulled off in the arenas, acm etc.  Or great screenshots..  Or every few months feature Yanksfan's films, or films like Kermit's, etc.

Or all of the above.

Add option for you to see yours/others score in AHII. Like have a little list set out with Check boxes for you to check. Me personally, I only keep up with my Fighter Kills/Deaths and Kills/Sorties.

You can already do that.  In game type /.score playerID or on the website go to home/community/scores/pilot score and type in the player ID.
I edit a lot of my posts.  Get used to it.

With reference to the 3 posts directly above.  When I first started playing these games (AOL Fighter Ops in 1999) I thought it was somewhat rude to look up a players personal score....I really did :lol

Gotta keep rank in the game how else can you command cv without loads of recoad.

A featured piece of ACM would go along way on impacting the mind set in my opinion.  However, the only folks that would see it or any of the other suggests forwarded, would be the one percent of the player base. ...those that visit the boards.  And newcomers that DL the game who in turn stand a good chance of not visiting that site again :frown:

Well, if the visitors to the front page see obvious clues that the content there is updated (often enough) and that it's interesting (enough), they'll come back to check on it every now and then..  It'd be a matter of finding the right content/quantity/frequency of those parameters I put in parenthesies.

I've already got at least a few films of really picturesque ACM in .ahf's.

Another random idea... Have a visible link to an AHWiki featured article, and update it every so often... gonna be sort of a long period between articles, since there aren't many to choose from.. Then again there must be a dozen articles already, so at one or two weeks a pop, there's already at least 3 months' worth.

I know that, but when I check my score, I have my rank right there. I personally just want to see ONLY that stuff. Give us like a little chart of what you want to see.

So lets say I only want to see my number-rank. I just check that box, leave the others alone...

how about the top 100 killers, showing what they killed and what they were in?

plus in the MA, it would be cool to see a scrolling text of who killed who,at the time of the kill.

and on a new page you can put the top scorers, and a bunch of different stats, for the separate country's.

rooks were killed X amount
Rooks captured X amount of bases
Rooks won X amount of resets

From a business perspective, having the "top" pilots listed on the website is just a good idea.  I can't imagine HTC would change that.

In reply to some of the other posts up the page, I'm not saying remove SCORE itself. Just stop posting the biggest scorepotatos on the front page every month. Most of 'em only get it through serious effort at gaming the score formula. Most of them are no more skilled at piloting than I am.

A big part of the allure of Aces High is the continuity of the gaming experience. That continuity is what distinguishes it from traditional first person shooters which generally have very little to none. The rank/score aspect of AH and the 15 minutes of fleeting fame it potentially affords on the web-page is merely symbolic marketing of that continuity.

The beauty of this system is that you can choose to play is such a way as to create continuity for yourself and compare that to others or not, the choice is always yours with no intrinsic penalty for choosing not to do so. I have played many games and in my experience those that are specifically designed to have a draw beyond any single gaming session tend to retain players far better simply by virtue of persistant depth.

The rank structure as it is divided into its four core facets and their constituent components, is a potentially valuable metric, albeit unavoidably flawed, to compare the various aspects of your performance to others and especially yourself from one "camp" to the next. If we remove all artifacts of scoring and rank from the game, we should , by the same logic, reset the maps everyday. After all, a persistant gaming environment that reflects the relative geographic success of the countries is really just a visually tangible form of score keeping. But, doing so would obviously destroy the continuity of experience for the "win the war" types.

So, it is in the best interest of the game to retain, not remove, aspects of continuity. Sure, some people will take the rank/score thing to the extreme in the vain pursuit of public accolades, which could conceivably have a cumulatively negative impact on gameplay. But, I maintain it's necessary to provide an overarching context for the AH gaming experience, removing it would have far worse repercussions.

There's more to gain from adding quality bits of other types of gameplay than removing the score ranks.  Remove the score ranks and you have no appeal to any type of players.  Add more types and you appeal not just to the score gamers (good and bad) but to other types of gamers too.

so true, my rank has always been in the 3000 range, but i have shot down most if not all of the top scorers,  some of them quit easily, to the point of being disappointed.
