Hope this is the right place for this
« on: June 26, 2008, 02:46:05 PM »
.......i don't know if this is something new or not, but maybe a warning here..........

i was googleing the intro robert deniro did on snl with the suspected terrrorists. i clicked on what looked like a normal/safe page, and it came up on the very first search page. it loaded the page, and i was scrolling down...about 1/2 way down, it stopped scrolling, and my puter started acting weird. then spybot went nuts, as did zonealarm. spybot was blocking multiple attempts to add to my registry, as zonealarm was doing the same and also blocking some .exe program. i couldn't get them to stop, so i reached down, turned off the modem, then rebooted my puter. it took me a couple hours to finally get it started and working well enough to run spybot, which found a couple additions to my registry. when i DID get it started, i had a blue screen(like the blue screen of death) with a bright yellow box in the middle that said ""spyware detected. install spyware and clean your computer."" the text was bright red.

so i don't know if this is something new going round, or if i just got some schmuck got into my puter...but for now i think it's fixed........
i downloaded the trial version of trendmicro, and will be running that tonight when i get home.

has anyone heard of this kind of thing before?

thanks,
john

never heard of it bro.........sorry to hear that happened.

since you have spybot.........make real use of it and use the "tea timer" function.  that way....NOTHING can write to your registry.

I just saw where you said you dl'd the trial trend micro ...did you not have any anti-virus installed?  you don't have to pay for antivirus.....there is something called AVG that apparently is pretty damn good.......and completely free.

here's some free cannot live without programs to keep things running smooth once you clean up you puter:

AVG AntiVirus:
http://free.grisoft.com/

Advanced Windows Care (cleans temp files and everything else......also cleans registry)
http://www.iobit.com/advancedwindowscareper.html?Str=download

Defrag (best I've seen and fast as lightning)
http://www.iobit.com/iobitsmartdefrag.html?Str=download

Privacy Mantra (best "one touch" temp file privacy deleter and fast as lightning...destroys all temp files..leaves no trace)
http://www.codeode.com/privacymantra/index.html

And I guess you already have Spybot....just remember to turn on the tea timer.  anything that wants to write to your registry must get your permission.

WELL, THAT'S WHERE I PROBABLY GOT A LITTLE OVERCONFIDENT/STUPID.
between zone alarm, and spybot, nothing was even gettingto the point of norton having to let me know about anything, so i haven't been updated for almost 2 years. till now, all was good. i'll try the avg, as you're about the 3rd person to mention it, including an IT guy in CAP.
i'll check out the other links too, as i want my machine to be good to go in game..if i ever get back in there.

thanks guys!

free is good....free is my friend :D

zeta's reply got me to thinking about the grisoft antivirus. i'm in CAP, and remembered that we can go to one of our pages and download the full corporate version of thier software for free. those of you also in CAP may want to consider this.
i ran it last night. it found 14threats, including 3 trojan downloaders. it also cleaned them. it took some time, but al that matters is that it did it's job,
now tonight when i go home, i'll run the defrag that zeta linked in here.......

i really did think that i was generallly safe to click on page links in google when i was doing a general searh. obviously i wasn't and will be much more careful when i do click into a page.

 thanks!!
