No Video Input sometimes during boot-up
« on: June 27, 2008, 10:34:39 AM »
The last two days I've received two calls when I'm at work from my wife saying that she boots up my computer at home and the monitors do not turn on (no video signal is being outputted).  I tell her to hold the power button in for a hard shut down and power it back up.  Problem is fixed.  I know the computer is fully booting up as well because my work MSN is booted off saying I was signed in on another computer.

I have no experienced the problem myself but can only start to wonder the state of health of my GPU.  I would think that if say my PSU was the source of the problem I would see it in the voltage readings and that it wouldn't fix itself after a reboot.  All the cables and everything are securely fastened.  The GPU is in correctly in the PCI-E slot.  It is non-overclocked as well.  It's not a monitor problem because I have two monitors hooked up to the GPU.

Thoughts?  Or should I just aim for a RMA from EVGA?  The GPU is about 17 months old.

I have had a problem similar to that twice now.  First time my monitor would go out randomly and after unplugging and restarting everything it worked for a while.  Only after a week did i find out my LCD monitor died after a short 6 months (must be because  dropped it from about a foot).  Second time my GPU was not getting power it needed all the time, found out my PSU was fading in and out. Would start on occasion then other times only what it could power would start.  Not sure if it's the same time but could hurt to check with another PSU, unless you're sure it's not it.

All the numbers on the PSU look good.  But of course I can only monitor those numbers when the computer has video output so the PSU may be iffy at time.  I did do a spring cleaning/install of new HSF about two weeks ago so I will check to see if the PCI-E plug is loose or something.
