The Greatest Hamburgers On Earth (or any place else!)
« on: June 29, 2008, 12:29:47 AM »

Claude and Orlene Herd are retiring. Herd's Hamburgers are the best hamburgers you will ever eat. Handmade patties cooked on a WW2 griddle. Family owned since 1916 the operation will now be handed over to Claude's son. But it just won't be the same.
Story in today's FtWorth Star-Telegram.

'Tis a sad day for burger afficianados around the world (or any place else) . :cry

"We had one fellow, used to come in here, probably weighed 500 pounds,” Herd recalled. "He would order four double-doubles."

Double meat. Double cheese.

"He’s dead now."

 :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl

grew up around a similar place.  best homemade rootbeer and tenderloins in the world...or anywhere else.

my grandma's place.

had an article when it closed.  picture of her pouring the last root beer.

it was called "the derby drive in."

Was gonna recommend Martha's Black Dog in Socorro, NM again, but apparently it closed down for good.  A real shame.

When I managed our store in Jacksboro I sold Claude his ground chuck. He and Orlene are the nicest people you will ever meet. If you ever went in there and bought a Herdburger, they remembered you by name the next time you walked in. My name is up on their north wall. I always sat on the wooden Dr.Pepper cases. Double double with jalapenos.

I had a great burger place 1 mile from my house.  The Golden Nugget.  A little dive that seated about 30.  They redeveloped the property and I think the Golden Nugget moved to nearby Hopkins.  I haven't been there since.  It just can't be the same.
I edit a lot of my posts.  Get used to it.

Herd's seats about 10 inside (if you don't mind sitting on old wooden Dr. Pepper cases) and another 15-20 on the picnic tables outside. Here's a view of the "dining room".

I've been to some great places in great cities: Chicago, D.C., Indy and all over some great states- IL, IN, WI, MI, TN, KY, MO, AL, GA... and lots more, but that place looks like it could give any one of my places a run for their money.  :aok

Hi-Ho Tavern in Dilworth Minnesota still makes the best burgers in the world.
And you can get a tall frosty of 1916 keg rootbeer to wash it down with.

And as of the last time I checked, price was still reasonable.

Of course if you choose to believe that Herds is best down there, well I won't argue that point with you.

But if your in the Fargo Moorhead area, its the Hi-Ho. :)

You ever get to Yuma Arizona go to a place called "Beef, Beans, and Beer". Sits on the the main highway right by the Marine Corps airstation/ regional airport. :aok They make some pretty awesome burgers, though their specialty is cooking steaks/ribs and such.

Whenever we got deployed out there most of us would walk the 2-3 miles from the main gate of the base to the restaurant, chow down, then walk back to base. Great food, good beer, and exercise, what more do ya need?! :aok

I recall a place from my youth near or in Milwaukee (not sure of the city borders). Kopps.  Not sure if it nostalgia or not, but I remember them being really good. Haven't been there in 25 years.

The best I've had, probably not the best in the world was a place in Neenah/Menasha, WI called Nicki's or Nicky'.  Good old Kaiser bun on a nice greasy patty.  Oh how I miss that place.  It burned down about 10 years ago, probably a grease fire :rofl
