Looking @ any of the vintage photographs (especially battle of Britain) seems everyone had a rear-view mirror mounted on top of the canopy. Could add a nice touch of reality to AH and certainly made sense ....

It's widely regarded that these mirrors WERE pretty useless.

Still, something with a limited field of view and reduced vis range for checking 6 would be nice.

Still to model this in the virtual cockpit would be a real challenge (how in hell do you model a reflective surface in forward & up position?)

Are you up to it HT?

Interesting, never read an account along those lines.  F/A 18 is modelling those fairly well and I found it usefull when flying for some 15 minutes or so [I don't fly jet sims normally].

BTW, there was a huge discussion on blacking out and I read from the Korean war a first-hand account today that they blacked within 2-3 seconds from pulling 6g but were concious though blind so AH seems to be doing a fairly accurate job despite many people filling that it's exaggerated.

Also what would the Frame Rate hit be like to have a mirror in the cockpit.  I think it would be nice from time to time to have but for the trade off of lowering FPS I can do without a small historical piece.

Muahahahahahahaha!  The "Mirror Topic!"  Escape while you cannnnnn!

Here.  I'll save you guys some time, so you won't have to read the rest of the thread...

Poster Boy 1 (usually a US type): Real planes had mirrors.  Are we gonna get em?

Poster Boy 2 (usually a LW type): They sucked in real life.  They vibrated.  They were too small.  By the time you saw him in the mirror it was too late.

Poster Boy 3 (usually a trainer): Too much frame rate hit.  Never work with this graphics model.

Poster Boy 4 (usually Jedi)  :  Um...they had em in Air Warrior TEN years ago, and they worked OK.  Guess we lost the "knowledge of the ancients" somewhere along the way, eh?  Just make em optional--choose between a six view and a mirror view.

Poster Boy 5 (usually a rookie):  My grandpa flew P-47Cs in WW2 and he said his mirrors saved his life about four times.

Poster Boys 2 & 3 (in harmony):  Anecdotal evidence! Anecdotal evidence!  No fair!

Next 27 Posts:  Rehash of Poster Boys 1 thru 5 arguments.

Bottom line:  they COULD do em.  They COULD be made to work fairly, and not give "unrealistic" SA advantage or "unacceptable" frame rate hit.  But, with the current VERY forgiving rear views available in the sim with customization (except, naturally, the F4U, as USUAL), why would you need a mirror?

OK, you can skip the rest of the posts and go to the next topic    OK, hardheads, see if I didn't warn ya...

With customizable views they don't make enough of a difference to get worked up about?

Jedi, your posting's funny but gives little concrete insight into whether they make sense or not, IMHO.

The argument about customizable views is OK, I personally find rear-view mirrors superior if we can have them.

Ultimately, they're not worth any serious drop in frame rate, that one I agree upon.

Jedi.. you missed the post where Poster Boy 1 replies to Poster Boy 2 by saying that LW aircraft vibrated more than US iron (particularly a certain Navy aircraft), therefore rear view mirrors should be useless on LW aircraft but should be lifesavers on US planes

Of course, this then skews the thread off into another 150 posts about which WW2 aircraft vibrated the most, or least.

Sound familiar???

I think Jedi just about said it all....

No wait, I know he said it all, its very old and very well beaten dead horse.

It just all comes down to whether or not HTC wants to implement them in this game.

Hmmmm, mirrors and vibrations.  Begining to sound like an AOL chat room!!!

Solution:All Rooks and Knights are to stay off my 6.

Result:No need for any mirrors!!!!
