You're basically betting with the company that the price of gas will go up, where they bet that it will go down.

If the price drops, you pay MORE, or you don't use the card, either way they already have your money.

If the price rises, they have advertising to lure in more people to buy at the peak.

I think I located two gasoline speculators a year or so ago.
They came across a fence and around a building at about 2:00 AM with a five gallon gas can and a hose.
The funny part was that I was leaned up against the car at the time and they nearly ran into me. I wasn`t holding a flashlight. 
I convinced them the station was closed and I canceled their discount.
