Joy Stick Set Up Saitek X52 and Saitek Rudder Paddles
« on: July 03, 2008, 11:21:09 AM »
~S~
I am not really new here been a very long time since I flown AH. I since then have changed from MSFF2 to Stick X52 and Rudder Paddles.
I tried to key map the things I wanted to put on my stick and throttle  but it doesn't work. I am not a very smart person when it comes to programing. I want to set up my stick for twin engine Bomber mainly the A-20C/G. Any help would be very appreciated. Thank You.

well  with the x-52 there are certin functions that you wont be able to map in the ah program, like using the rotaries for anything other than trim or maping the mouscontrol as a fourway hat.

i would suggest as a starting point to download the newest saitek programing software. map all the functions you think your gonna need the esintials in ah then map what you want using the software.

i only use the software for maping things to the mouse control and maping to the rotaries. it comes with a nice help section to help you out too.

main thing i would sugest and something you should figure out first is how your gonna get veiws.

the main hat in the center of the stick is already the default veiw hat in their software, the throttle hat and the secondary on the stick are fourways unless you map them as 8 ways in the software.

i would sugest using the pinky switch for your up veiw and the main hat for the others. thats what i do.
but if you feel that is too uncomfortable you can change the throttle hat to 8way and map it as your veiw hat.

there is just so much you can do with it its insane. check out the technical support forum somewhere in there maybe a few pages back is a long tirade on the x-52.;
id also sugest checking out saitek's website for help to give you ideas.

what you want is something efficent and easy to control now for you and me that's probably 2 very different ideas of set up.

Thanks goober69 for the infro. As for views I have Tracker IR so that's no problem. I just want to get the main things map out like starting the engines/selecting both engines and rasing/lowering the flaps and lowering/rasing the landing gear and opening/closing the Bomb Bay doors and to get my rudder paddles and throttle working.  Again if any one else has any ideals Please let me know.
Thank You

I don't have a Saitek stick, so I won't be able to help you with specific things, but AH has a very good setup area for your controllers. There is a great write up on the trainers page <HERE>. Basically you open the note book, click on "map controllers" and you get this.....

Selet your controller from the drop down menu, and then click the default button. Select mode 1, and check the "auto select" box (this makes sure your map for flight is map 1, your map for GVs is map two. That way you don't have to remember to switch the modes when you switch )

If you selected your stick, hit a button on your stick and it will highlight it on the list. if you pushed the view hat to the up position and it lists it as "View Look Front Up" like in the picture, but you want it to look strait up. Click the modify button and using the drop downs locate the funtion you want, say under the views heading you find the "View Look Up", click on it and hit the OK/save button. You have now re-mapped that button.

The axis are the same, move the axis to ID the one on the list, click it, modify it and select the analog input you want for that axis. You can switch to a different controller by either opening the drop down at the top, or by hitting a switch on the other controller. Set up each switch and axis, and remember to save it often, and write down what you assign to what. Took me a week to start remembering what was what  :D

Good luck!

Thank You for your help. I have some of the stick map set on my stick now so I can at least fly in the game. I have to go through and program them on the profiler for Saitek now  probbly take a few months to get it set up the way I want it. I am having a bit of a problem with the rudder paddles, when I start to take off the plane moves from one side to the other, plus the fact that there is no tail whell lock dose not help. All in all I was able to get both the Mustang and A-20 into the air. Any way Thank You Fugitive and goober69 for your help.

pulling the stick back slightly will lock the tail wheel.  You may have to scale your rudder pedals. Most of us "old guys" don't have real fine motor controls of the big muscles in our legs any more and any movement with throw the tail all over the place.

One issue you might have crop up with Saiteks SST software is in mapping the 2 keystroke commands in SST. Some work, some dont.

For instance Aces High has a function that is mapped shift/P in Aces high and you want to assign it to one of the buttons on your controllers. So you assign it to your X-52 toggle 4 button, but, you find out it doesnt work. Or it may work in one profile but not another.

A work around would be to change its mapping in the game from shift/P to a one keystroke map that had been mapped for a function you'll probably never use anyway. For instance F8 or something. So now you have what was a 2 keystroke function re-mapped to a 1 keystroke one. It will probably work in SST now.

The trick is to keep a record of all the mapping changes you made so you dont forget whats mapped to what.

you could also turn on auto take-off, then the pedals wont matter unless you touch them during take off.

i also have a X52. i dont use saiteks software because its a pain. i just use the mapping in AH2. works great for me. the 2 rotary's on the throttle are my trim. the 4 way switch on the front of the throttle is combination, landing gear and flaps.

the hat switches on my joystick are views, the very left thumb switch is my WEP, and the 2 right thumb switches are zoom and check 6. pinky switch is my combat trim.  i hope this helps give you some ideas.

Here's what works for me.

Throttle:
8 way = flaps (up/down), vox (range/squad)
Slider = RPM
Thumb Button = Fire all guns

Stick:
Big Hat switch = Views (of course)
Pinkie = WEP
Index Trigger = Look up
C button = bombay doors open

Those are the major ones.

right now on mine,

the hat on throttle is my flaps up down and aleiron trim l/R
the e button is my range vox the other button is my tuned vox
\the wheel beside the throttle is zoom in and out and zoom toggle
i turned the clutch buton into a fire button so i could use it to change set up for bombers and such

my throttle is only maped up to the after burner indent, when i push through or pull back from it it turns my wep on and off slider is for rpm.s
mouse hat is gear up/down icon mode and system info toggle mouse button brings up clipboard

on the stick
i have the trigger maped for   fire primary/ fire all guns
the bomb release button is for secondary weapon the button to the right selects secondary weapon
the flat button onm the left {C} i think is message window size
the main hat is my veiws pinky switch is my up view
on the four way hat i have wheel brakes dive flaps and my autopilot modes
on the toggles i have  1 three times to bail out
2 feul tank select
3map zoom in
4 map zoom out
5engine on/ off
6 select all engines

even though i have all this stuff maped i still use the keyboard some times
but when im engaged my hands never leave my throttle or stick.
most of the functions i dont use much

oh yea and my rotaries are maped with the top one as elev trim and bottom as rudder.

but i dont use em cause i need to take it in for a new one those rotaries went out on me about a week ago keep spiking and doing weird stuff. so time to go back to best buy and trade it in.

How do you map the mouse control thingummywot for the trim?  I've tried but never succeeded.

Also, with the afterburner detente (sp?), how do you get it to work reliably?  I had it mapped to turn on WEP for a while, but it wasn't very reliable (as in sometimes it would turn on WEP when I wanted it to, other times it would turn it on when I wanted to be at full throttle without WEP, and other times it wouldn't turn on WEP when I wanted it), so eventually I just got rid of that function and mapped it to another button.

In addition, but slightly off-topic, have any of you ever had problems with your X-52 uncalibrating, suddenly not responding, etc?  If so, how have you solved them, and do they keep recurring?

Thanks for any help,
<S>

I have;
First trigger click primary guns,
Second trigger click all guns,
Top hat switch view shift,
Lower trigger switch snap views,
Pinky trigger to look up,
'Fire' To secondary,
A to flaps up,
B to flaps down,
C to secondary weapon select,
and the switches to select gunner positions...

on the throttle;
E to engine,
the rotary thing around E to aileron trim,
D to gear,
the slider under D to elevator trim,
I to WEP toggle,
The little silver button next to the blue thing to channel vox,
and lots of little functions on the hat on the throttle,
the rolly wheel shifts the amount of zoom and pressing the wheel brings up the clipboard.
