The only person I've ever personally seen, that I absolutely know for sure is flying purely for fun and no other reason, is Guppy/CorkyJr.  Nobody but nobody seems to enjoy the simple pleasure of upping a virtual plane for no other purpose than to see what kind of trouble he/she can get into.

I'm not saying other folks don't fly like this, but in my experiences nobody exemplifies the 'just play for fun' statement like him.

Why thank you.  Glad it shows :)

He's a tyrant.  You haven't seen him in our S.A.P.P meetings.  You should hear how he yells and berates us for not doing our jobs properly.  Do you know why Mensa has a lazy eye?  CorkyJr slapped him around one night, knocked that eye kilter for not hitting the VH with torpedos like he was ordered to.  I virtually wet my pants everytime Corky says my name and have a nervous tick from the last beating he gave me when I didn't join on a 25v1 against a lone C-47.  How do you think Shuffler got his handle?  It's because Corky caned him in the shins one night for not making the Top #5, poor guy has shuffled ever since.  We'd all leave but we're scared of him, even our Grand Exhalted Ruler treds lightly around Corky.  Play for fun?  The only fun he has is when he beats us.

In other news, perusing this thread off and on over the last couple days one thing has become apparent to me, I think the wrong question was asked.  To me the obvious answer is that everyone plays for fun, the real question is how do you define fun within the context of AH.  There's teh crux of the discussion, furballers would jump in and say something about they have fun playing cartoon fighter pilots till a lousy timid cherry picker, alt monkey, armchair general comes along and burns their fighter hangars to the ground.  The strat guys would counter by saying the point of the game is to coordinate and play as a team and the furballing is a waste of country resources, it's "mindless"  and all the furballers should just leave because they're getting in the way of the "real objective".

Awhile back Field Marshal Dan/Corky/Guppy in a rare moment of lucidity had some interesting ideas on changing the base layout and tweaking the MA style of gameplay that would encourage both parts of the game.  Trying to bring together the two opposing gameplay styles is a more interesting discussion IMHO (although we know how little that matters). :)

besides, i cant play to save my life so i get shot down most of the time anyway. making it back to the runway is not a priority. that's why i never run. i always fight and either win or die.

If everyone would play like that, there would still Be a lot of people playing AH.that's how it was a while back, but now they all just run away from you.

You know I hear this alot, but honestly, I suspect it is a "Golden Age" myth. Kind of
like all those Arthurian tales about chivalrous Knight-Errants questing about and besting Black Knights who harass fair damsels and bridge-crossers for no apparent reason. While in reality, a Knight was a landlord most of the time and a sort of primitive tank for shock and awe against ranks of untutored peasant conscripts in times of war.  Those times of war when he couldn't wriggle out of having to go, at any rate.

Yes, it was during the Golden Age and not a myth.  Unfortunately, the Golden Age died when that retard idea of the Aces High Championship Shootout contest was announced.  Since then fun took a back seat to timid flying and score potatos.  Too bad you weren't around back then, you may have a different outlook to the game.
