What a few of us KNOW about the Yellowbird is that it launched a hailstorm throughout the Automotive World, even after the 959 was released.   In 87, I believe the Top Speed was 211mph, had a 0-60 of 4.0 secs, 0-120 of 11.0.   Um, that's haulin'.

Not to mention like the 959 (which IMO is the most advanced auto ever produced for any time period, putting it ahead of the Tucker Torpedo), the RUF had even more innovation.   IIRC the CTR's back then had a clutchless Manual trans.

not much better 21 years later.

I respectfully disagree.

The car in the video is a supercharged ZR1.  The bone stock version had right around 400 HP. this one has 638 HP.  2008 - 21 = 1987.  The ZR1's production run was between 1990 and 1995. the ZR1's curb weight was just over 3300 pounds.

The 2008 Z06 has 500 HP right out of the box.  Add a supercharger and the car could easily produce 700 HP.  The Z06 has a curb weight of 3160 pounds.  Add to this the fact that the new Vette has near perfect 50/50 weight distribution, a more efficient gearbox, a more stable suspension and way better tires, and it's no wonder why that "Top Gear" guy hates it so much.

Disagree all you want.   The bottom line is this.   The Yellowbird can hang with a car made 21 years later.    The Yellowbird was faster than the ZR1 of 1990.   I'm still wondering what your "debate" on all of this is?    The Callaway Sledgehammer smokes all three (CTR, ZR1, new ZR1) and it was produced in 1988.

HP is one facet and if that is what determines "the biggest production automobile genitalia".  Then the Bugatti Veyron wins at 1,001HP (depending on climate it is at 1,050HP).   Although, the same argument can be made for the Koenig Competition Evolution of 1990 that had 1000 HP (IIRC, 0-60 in 3.5 and 0-125mph in 10.0 sec's.   That is FILTHY for a 18 year old car).

I know all about the Original ZR1 and even though I'm a Ford guy at heart, I was pissed when they ho'd the ZR1 name.   The original is my Fav. Vette of all-time.

All I said was that both the GT-R and new ZR1 aren't much better than a 21 year old car.   It is fact.

I  was also a big fan of the ZR1 and I respectfully disagree with your assumption that the Z06 is "not much better" than the ZR1.  The fact of the matter is that by the time the ZR1 got to production the GM bean counters had effectively neutered it and with each subsequent production year they chopped off a little more.  With the Z06 Chevy did it right and it's a production car we (Americans) can be proud of.  Remember, the car in the video is a pre-production car.  Watching car manufacturers run time trials around The Ring in pre-production cars is like watching cartoon porn.

Your comment about the Yellow Bird bears no connection with my original post.  I love Porsches and love 911's even more.  Throw the acronym RUF into the equation and I will pitch a tent.

I merely responded in line with my stance.

You are giving the 21 year old car in question too much credit.  You are comparing 2 stock MASS PRODUCTION sports cars against a limited production tuner car.

Come on.. RUF is a small tuner for an unorthodox brand (rear engined rear wheel drive pure sports cars)..  Nissan makes what's arguably the most user-friendly and easy to exploit pure sports car (arguable too, it seats 4 etc) of its level, and the ZR1 is going to be pretty restricted in production.. The real competitor to the ZR1, the V-spec, is going to be a similarly limited production.  Saying the comparison is only fair if the cars are mass produced is a loaded comparison.  I reckon that Japanese design and production also plays a good part in unbalancing an attempt at even grounded comparison between GM's, Nissan's, and Porsche/RUF's models of this performance level.
A 1987 car still doing as well as the original CTR is no small credit.

Wow, that argument looks very familiar...

LMAO, Jay!

Whiteman and I are planning on meeting up at a car meet tomorrow evening.  I'll take pics and you'll see some really awesome rides from around here!

Oh yeah, I went to a car meet tonight that has a sign posted at the front, "Stop!  Hot rods and showcars only!".  Some young guy in a red Honda Civic 2 door with a high spoiler stopped, turned around, and parked outside of the entrance.  It was pretty funny.

Woot!!!   I had to drive the wife to the dealership to pick up her car.   On the way?    There is the most God awful turquoise V-6 Camaro with a "custom dual exhaust" and Chrome Vette wheels.   The exhaust note was similar to my wife's 2006 Sable.   Poor guy turned before I could point and laugh at him.
