ARRGH. I want the CHog Perked too, and yes, there were only around 200 built, BUT..man, people need to give up on this "they didn't fly from carriers" business..how the heck did that idea get popularized? It's been killed off on the board for weeks.
It is ABUNDANTLY obvious and proven in multiple sources that they flew into combat off CARRIERS.
From Hammel's "Aces Against Japan" Chapter "Taming the 20mm" Lieuntenant Joe Robbins, USN, in VF-85 (USS Shangri-La) Okinawa, May 4-11, 1945...
"On May 4th, 1945, I was the leader of twelve F4U-1Cs assigned to fly target CAP over a picket destroyer located about 12 miles north of Okinawa. We took off from the Shangri-La in the early morning....."
In fact, what ISN'T proven is whether any flew from LAND bases; that is, all the references and stories I've personally seen has them flying their combat sorties off carriers during the Okinawa Campaign. I haven't seen actual evidence that any were ever flown from land bases in combat.
I strongly suspect they WERE at some point (probably the Marine CHog squadrons began the Okinawa campaign based off escort carriers and quickly moved to land bases on Okinawa after they were captured)
But, if not, rather than the oft-proposed idea to disable them from Carriers, they COULD be disabled from land bases, perhaps?
