UPGRADE TO WIN98????

MY current systems stats r on the bench mark page. since ill upgrade to a step thermo dynamics CUmine 600-800 chip along with a ultra 770, i want to no if going to 98 from 95 shood be a first step b4 the nu equipment?

I would personally recommend going to Win98. It is more stable, and has better user tools. It is what Win95 was supposed to be, 2 years earlier.

ok...sounds like a plan..but..just go out and buy the 90$ upgrade is ok..or buying the whole 175$ OS??

I am a do-it-from-scratch kind of guy, and would recommend the full version. That way you can format the drive and start absolutely clean.

Of course, I never get the AH patch either- always the full download.

Make sure you get win98 Second Edition. It's vastly more stable than the original version.

BTW,Win95 OSR2.5 is more stable and faster than any win98 IMHO

You can format and start from scratch with the upgrade, you'll just have to pop in your 95 cd when it asks for confirmation (I'm fairly sure even an upgrade version of the 95 will qualify).  No sense in giving Bill an extra $50 if you don't have to.

Here's the best way to do it IMO.  Make a win98 emergency disk.  Format your hard drive.  Copy the win98 directory from the win98 cd to the HD.  Run setup from there.  You won't get the channel bar, but setup will only take 20 mins tops, and you will never have to insert the win98 cd EVER.  This works for first edition, but it should be ok for 2nd edition too.  If you buy the upgrade version, you will need a windows cd to insert during setup to prove you are eligible for the upgrade version.  If you have an old win 95 cd, or even windows 3.1 disk 1, you are all set.  Of course you could just do the standard upgrade, and you will probably be fine 99% of the time.  Just make a backup, and/or tell setup to backup your current config during the upgrade.

Edit:  I better mention that the clean install method above, WILL COMPLETELY ERASE YOUR HARD DRIVE, of course.  But if you don't have anything you need anymore, go for it.  Just backup what you need to cd-r, zip, etc.

Massive CC on the move to 98 - BSODs are no longer there .

The only difference between an Updrade and The full version (other than price, of course) is that the Upgrade is looking for previously installed version to start the install.

It's just plain silly to pay extra - all you need to do is to pop in Win95 CD when it asks you "can't find previous version... blah-blah-blah". I actually use 3.1 floppies - Win98 setup is happy after 3 or 4... Same works for all MS products - Office swallows 1st floppy from Access v2.0 and starts installing without further questions.

I reformat my HD once a year just to clear all the gunk - install on a freshly formatted HD from a upgrade CD - no problems at all.

Win98SE OEM version is the ticket.  You can get the latest OEM version legally if you purchase a mainboard, CPU, or HD along with it.  It is always better to get the OEM version, since it has frequent updates, while the retail "upgrade" version will still be the original product.

BTW, I reccomend 128Meg of RAM for 98SE if you are a gamer.  98 uses more resources than 95, but it's mainly a RAM issue.  98 runs just fine on 64 Megs, but not as fast as 95OSR2 did.  The difference is marginal though, and 98SE is a much better and more stable product, however as a gamer I find I need 128 Megs for best game performance in 98SE.

I've found one problem which annoys me in Win98 but not in Win95... thats the use of scandisk everyday
If computer crashes, there probably always comes some boot sector errors with Win98 (if using win98's Fat32 or whatever it is)

So, recommended use of scandisk weekly or more often
