Cannot fly or view AH film viewer.
« on: July 15, 2008, 03:33:21 AM »
Sigh... Just got back to the stick for the first time in 6 months or so and got online to find that I have debilitating technical issues.  :cry

Ok, here we go.
List of symptoms:
The infamous "Clip board Spin"
Tower background black (all of the screen except for the chat windows are black)
When spawning out on the runway to fly I just sit there, cannot see my cockpit and screen rolls infinately around in circles.
Game locks up (not crash) in less than 1 second (most of the time) of joining the game.

All drivers should be in a compatible version (or atleast they were the last time I was flying 6 months ago)

Here's my DXdiag

As per this post, you will have to run the game in "Windows 98/ME" compatibility mode due to a bug in the dual-core AMD CPU when running under Vista.

I am running it in compatibility mode for Windows xp sp2.
Swapping to 98/ME now.
Works like a charm. Should I need to do this for AH Film viewer as well? Locks up as soon as I play any recorded video.

Yes, you would need to do it for the film viewer as well.

Correction.
A new error has occured.
The clip board spin, runway roll, and background blackening has discontinued since swapping compatibilities to 98/ME.
Now within the first 4-8 seconds of being in the game I get a COMPLETE System lockup. Must entirely reset the computer or shut off power.

PS: the AH film viewer issue has been resolved.

If you are running the Saitek control manager, I would drop it.  I have had reports of a lot of problems running it under Vista.

I assume you are running stock game sounds as well.  If not, then you will have problems.

If you are running the Saitek control manager, I would drop it.  I have had reports of a lot of problems running it under Vista.

Where Might I find an option to disable this? I cannot find any options for it under: "System processes, Game controllers, or Device manager".

Also, I downloaded two optional updates from microsoft for Windows vista x64 systems named
"Saitek - Game Devices - Saitek X52 Pro Flight Controller (USB)"
"Saitek - Game Devices - Saitek X52 Pro Flight Controller (USB)"
After downloading these two updates for windows (directly from the Windows Update program not Microsoft.com) I have had next to NO issues with my X52 controllers. Is disabling the "Saitek Control Manager" going to disable my controllers or disable my ability to use macro profiles with the SST?

I greatly appreciate your time and patience with me Skuzzy, you're a HUGE help and damn good at what ya do!  :aok

My suggestion was to remove it.  I presume you could do it via the Vista Control Panel option that allows the add/removal of software.  I am not in the office or I would get the name of the new ICON as I think they changed it.

It is worth a try just to get to the bare minimums,

Are you running Vista with all its default background processes enabled?

I just had an epiphany, and yes I am running with windows Aero enabled, I'll try disabling it now and then test to see if it fixes the problem then I will try disabling saitek to see if it fixes the problem (provided it persists after I disable Aero) and will report back asap

I had already assumed you shut down Aero.

To get Vista stable, you need to shut down a number of things.  The SuperBoost and SuperFetch (or whatever the names are for this silly things) needs to be shut down as well or warping will be something you have to live with.

Yep. Aero was the issue. However I've noticed I cannot adjust my Head position in the cockpit to adjust my views (i.e. to see better around my tail or back of the seat.) and upon searching the key lists for about 30 minutes trying to find it I've come up blank.

Are you saying the arrow keys will not move your head in the cockpit or that they will not save when you press F10, even though you get a message saying they have been saved?

Ditto on both, sir. Previously saved head positions are not recalled and cannot reset using arrow keys(though, yes, I do get the message that they are).

Either a file permission problem has happened or the path to the files has been corrupted.  It is imperative you run the game consistently under Vista.  Example, you cannot rn the game using "Run as Administrator" one time and not the next time.  Vista uses two different paths to the game files when you do that.

Next, you should not be running Norton under Vista.  There are serious issues with Norton and Vista that cannot be worked around.

Also, you cannot install the game as one user and run it as another user without loosing your configuration settings in the game due to how Vista alters the paths of the game config files.

It could also be a simple matter of the files being write-protected, which is usually due to some security program, like Norton.

Now, if you are saying the head position will not change when you press the arrow keys (not on the number pad), then that is an entirely different matter.
