WWI Planes
« on: July 15, 2008, 05:18:45 PM »
This isn't really a wish since i don't think it will ever happen.  I think it would be a blast to dogfight in some WWI planes.  The old bi-planes and tri-planes would be a hoot.  They are slow, but extremely maneuverable, which could lead to some epic dogfights.  I imagine it being similar to a D3a duel.  If it was ever done, obviously a new arena would need to be added.

Warbirds has a WW1 server.
Oh my God, what has the Internet evolved itself into? :huh

The WarBirds WW1 fights are AMAZING! Becaue the small guns you have and you have to be a good shot! I've gotten into a furball with a Dr. 1 for about 20 minutes both of us shooting each other up.  :aok

The problem is there simply isn't enough interest to pay for the development and server costs.
Not to mention at best I never saw or heard of more than 50 people online with DOA.

Taking an admittedly wild guess. (personally I think the # of AH accounts is much bigger than this)
But being conservative, 6,000 people for AH, x 15$ a month = around 90,000 a month to pay the devs and support costs.

Even if it succeeded beyond our wildest dreams.
A WWII arena figure 500 accounts, would each have to kick in 180$ a month to reach the same level as AH.

In order to make it work you would need the same level of commitment!
In short, you would need to clone Hitech and his staff so one bunch could take care of AH, and the other bunch work on developing a WWI sim. Double the expenses, for nothing coming in.

There is simply no way.
The interest isn't there, there are not enough people willing to pay enough money to make it work.

Same is true of Korea era sim, although this would have a slightly larger fan base than  WWI

I think we would be much better off long term to simply keep asking for early WWII biplanes that saw action.
Keep asking for spanish civil war planes. Keep expanding our already impressive plane set.

And if you really feel the need to go slow and shoot with popguns.
Drop into the TA and grab a D3a1 to get your fix.  :)

I would never expect this to happen, just think it would be a blast.

Is Dawn of Aces still around? Might check it out. I played the demo when it first came out, wasn't my cup 'o tea, so I can't say if it's still kicking or not. I *have* seen banners at the warbirds webpage for it, though.

The WWI and Korean arenas in AW were not very populated (sort of like EW/MW here) but they were still fun to play in once in a while.  I particularly liked the WWI arena and would like to see it return.  HT did throw out the possibility of doing both of these at one point so I'd never say never.
I edit a lot of my posts.  Get used to it.

Dawn of Aces is fun. Because of the planes you fly that give you such a small SA so you gotta always be looking around. It's hard to kill them too. (Offline AI's are the funnest)
