A question about cannon rounds
« on: March 24, 2000, 12:05:00 PM »
After watching a few clips of guncams I am wondering if HTC could change the way cannon rounds are shown in the game. Notably in the La-5FN the ShVAK cannons did not fire tracers but rather had a distinctive large smoke trail when they fired.

The problem with tracers is that the tracer rounds have a quite different ballistic property than the cannon rounds. Notably they tend to fall low so at moderate ranges the gunner is "lied" too and ends up firing too high to hit the target. at 550 - 600 yds the ShVAK actually have a good hit percentage on a flat extending target but only if you aim the tracers slightly _below_ the target.

IRL this was not an issue as the cannons fired no tracers. instead they had a distinctive large smoke trail. I am hoping maybe the firing can be changed for cannons so that the current tracer rounds are gone and every 5th round becomes a smoke trail round. This would actually be perfect if the current smoke trail had a much scaled down version of our fuel smoke "weave" along it so in a straigtht or under the nose shot it kind of obscured the target like the actual rounds tended to do.

I second that, at least  make the tracer a different color for the cannon.

Good idea!

If we can't have the rounds with smoke trails how about a different color(like Rip said) or some other way to tell them apart from the bullet tracers.

An added bonus: with cannon rounds having smoke instead of tracers you will never see many succesfull spray kills at targets under an F4Uc's nose........
